Metal tubing is preferred over rubber tubing because it has greater heat and wear resistance. Rubber hydraulic tubing would work, but its working life would probably be shorter. Ferrari OEM parts were designed to be the best option for a given application. It's wise to stick with an original replacement part.

Cannot imagine why you would want to. The very best outcome you can hope for is to not make it have problems it does not have now.

I can see they sell pretty much all rubber hoses. That'll do?

Its what the car has now. Why not? The aviation industry was who started with steel braided lines and it was to protect the hoses from abrasion when run through the tight spaces often used on airframes. They are used on cars mostly because they look cool. They offer very little other practical advantage.

Just did several of the conversions and we simply made our own using steel lines we bent and then had the hydraulic shop make what we wanted with the correct ends using Teflon lined braided lines, its same material as braided steel brake lines, and then used firesleave for protection in the engine compartment.

I was thinking, if I choose not to remove the gearbox and keep the ATF-friendly throw out bearing seals,
can I just use ATF for the hydraulic clutch with its own reservior, yea?

Essentially yes you can. I'm looking at doing this on my own conversion. The trap is fluid compatibility with the seals in the clutch master cylinder which is rated to dot 4. ATF munches through the master cylinder seals in a matter of weeks. There is an alternative master cylinder, from a massey ferguson tractor of all things, rated for LHM fluid which is a mineral oil with very similar properties to ATF/F1 fluid. My understanding is also braided soft clutch lines offer very limited difference in pedal feel to a hard clutch line. EAG are using braided clutch lines in some of their conversions.

You need to replace the seals in the throw out bearing and use brake fluid in the circuit you cant short cut the job. We just order a replacement throw out bearing from Hill engineering for the Non F1 and replace the whole unit while we are in there. I suppose you can use braided line throughout but we chose to make this as close to factory in appearance as well as function as possible. Braided line can be very abrasive so you need to make sure it is well isolated and not rubbing on any components. It will quickly wear through anything like the aluminum or rubber coolant lines.

In a hydraulic system I would think that would lead to unwanted expansion which may affect the feel and functionality of the clutch pedal.
