Jerky acceleration on California?

hi sorry to reply a long dead thread. but i have a 2010 cali with exactly same problem as the ts. anyone confirm that replacing spark plugs solve it ?

I have a 2013 Cali 30 with the same issue. I’ve owned it for 3 years and put 7k miles on top of the 14k it had when I bought it, and it’s always had this problem. I pulled and inspected the plugs a few years ago and found them to be darker than they should be with black soot, but nowhere near as bad as the OP’s. Right before the last two annual services I ran one tankful of fuel system cleaner through and then rechecked the plugs. There was a noticeable improvement but the problem always eventually reoccurred. This summer I got a P0492 engine code, which is not uncommon and indicates either an air flow problem, a vacuum leak or carbon buildup. I did the fuel system cleaning again and cleared the code. The car ran better for several months but last week I got the same code again. I’m taking it in for its annual soon and this time I’m going to have them change the plugs as well as test for those other possibilities, including O2 sensor inspection.

 

hi Bill, so which activity you considered helpful, changing the plugs or cleaning the fuel ?

 

I haven’t changed the plugs yet, that will be soon though. Cleaning them and using the fuel system cleaner were done at the same time so I can’t really tell which did more good.

 

i see. how do u “clean” the fuel system ? any specific product i need to purchase ?

I am curious about the driving conditions of the cars suffering from hesitation and stumbling. Would those of you suffering the running issues say that the majority of your driving is stop/start & relatively low speed driving?

My Ferraris have never been very happy unless they get the occasional "Italian tune-up" (a good thrashing for an hour-or-two). They usually run much better after said thrashing.

I realise this is increasingly difficult to achieve in practice -- the speeds my Cali T can easily and quickly achieve would mean jail time where I live, not to mention a huge fine set as a percentage of income, so I have to go further afield, but I am genuinely curious if these issues arise because of drive cycle.

 

Most of my outings unfortunately tend to be relatively short duration drives a couple of times a week, but even on those I run the engine up to red line in 1st and 2nd gear once or twice if at all possible, never driving with the rpm below 2000 to 2500. I’ll also run in 3rd gear at highway speeds for a minute or two. I’ve put about 2500 miles a year on the car in my three years of ownership, so it gets what I consider to be enough usage to keep it in ‘fighting trim’.

 

My experience is that cars driven only in ten mile trips once or twice a week are prone to various "coking" problems. This is independent of brand or age of car in my household.
