The destination for all of us is death, so enjoy every part of the journey!
Amateur......LOL The Diablo is more like $10 per mile, but the appreciation more than covers that. For a 500 mile per year car, I don’t mind.
It’s steep. It all depends on how much enjoyment you get out of it. I passed on a 599 and California and went with a 911 because the fun/dollar ratio is easy to accept. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
True, we’ve all gotten a free ride due to appreciation the past few years. The equation is probably different for the guy considering a Diablo today. In fact, I wouldn’t bet on much more, if any, appreciation in the next 5-10 years. So you’re left with $5,000/year for a car to drive to cars and coffee. It’s a personal call as to whether that works. We’re all paying well over the minimum, which is probably something like a used Toyota, so everyone has his $/mile point that feels right. I’m in great shape even if the Diablo stops appreciating, that would be over 20 years of covered maintenance just in the difference between what I have in it today versus a very conservative valuation. My drives are much more spirited than going to a C&C, but I get your point and I know you understand that our driving days for an icon like that can be limited.....and over in a blink of an eye sometimes. So yes, well worth the $5-6k I choose to put into it every year......a good bit of the maintenance I put into it would fall under the “good caretaker” column, not because that many things break every year.
Would be fun in a convertible stick.... Every now and then I think a E92 V8 stick M3 would be a lot of fun in a hooning around kind of way.
oh no. I have just the one. I'm just an average F-car dreamer kid who is lucky enough to get one after 30 years. a second one? Not likely...
I love the search. I get super focused and spend a lot of time looking. It’s very enjoyable for some odd reason. When I find the combo I like I jump on it. I’ve never done a PPI. Probably twenty cars purchased site unseen. Just photos and short discussions with owners. I’ve been lucky I guess but seems most people are good or maybe I’m a good judge of character. My best search ever was finding a crapy vague auction on EBay for a 328 w/ 26k miles didn’t meet reserve for 35k. No records no history but hey it’s a 328 I could just do a major and sort it. He ran another auction no reserve this time. I lucked into getting it for $26k. Shipped it from OH to CA. When the truck arrived it was like Christmas! What did I get? Couldn’t wait to find out. She was covered in dust. Wow never even sat in a 328 before. I fit better than I imagined. Unloaded her and washed it right away. Wow that paint! She shined. Interior just needed a wipe down. But holly **** I found gold in the trunk. A 3” thick folder full of receipts. Wow. If the seller even mentioned the history in the add it would’ve easily fetched $50k. Still did a major, built great memories in that car over 4 years. Sold it for $65k. Achieved a childhood dream car. Love the search.. love the ownership experience as much.. car memories are the best memories for me. Lots of days go by forgotten but days involving Ferraris, Those are remembered!! With current F car blessings of an 812SF , Porto M, and F8s order pending, I’m off searching for a SL 63 now lol Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
So, like millions upon millions of wannabe car guys who made the same mistake, perhaps you too just bought a car you really couldn't afford to own ? Hopefully you weren’t one of the millions who think driving/owning a Ferrari (or other exotic vehicles) will somehow make them cool or less boring/more interesting. OTOH, you can rest assured there will be millions upon millions making the same mistake long into the future. Besides, if the cost* per mile was that important, perhaps you should've gotten a Toyota Camry, Prius or something to begin with instead ? * Based on your earlier comment of $60K/20K mi. and my middle school dropout math skills, shouldn't that equate to $3/ea ? P.S. No need for answers to any of the above, as they're merely rhetorical observations and since at least I find this topic borderline boring anyway, I don't care waste any more time with it.
My wife of 42 years always said that I enjoy the hunt more than the ownership. I find it interesting that over the years, Ferrari ownership has been equally gratifying in terms of search and purchase. And I have owned 10 Ferraris since 1987..... 4 - V12 models and 6 - V8's. When younger, I tended to buy the less desirable cars, or really beat (cheap) cars, repair/restore and sell to trade up. I now have a 365 GTC/4 and 360 Modena gated 6 speed, which will probably be the last Ferraris I buy. Have gone through a multitude of street/hot rods, mid year corvettes, and classic pickups over the years. Other than my '67 Corvette, the others are all gone now. It was fun chasing them, fixing them, driving them for a while...... but they didn't scratch that itch like a Ferrari.
Different cars for different phases of life. We live on the area of the depreciation maintenance trade off we are comfortable with at different times and receive the utility we seek at (variable) cost. Paradoxically new Ferraris cost less in total Ownership cost but are more scarce. To Purchase new requires time but replaces the time consuming hunt to get your ideal spec. Your two cars now are amazing examples of beauty and classic experience in usable cars. Congrats. Also congrats on the insight that comes with experience ( and sadly age) that allows us to know what we Want and value instead of what looks good to others. You’ve won the game of life by living according to what works for you instead of chasing someone else’s dream. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Driving a Ferrari males you feel speacial. It is an ego boost which is why people buy them. Sure they drive nice..but honestly not that nice..kinda junkie actually. They have problems they shouldn't have and that would be a class action lawsuit for another brand..exhaust manifolds for example...and add to that the sticky interior issue. We like them because the name "Ferrari" just kinda rolls off the tongue..and it just sounds rich. We like to throw the keys on the bar and order a glass of wine..and hope the cute bar tender notices . We like to meet in parking lots and pat each other on the back with how good we are at life and how nicely optioned each others cars are. We like to zip around down town reving our engines so the sound echos off all the glass buildings..we think the head shaking and finger wagging is jealously. We like to compair service invoices and how much we spent last week while the car was in shop. We like to talk down to corvette owners..and complain about thier cheesy interiors..even though ours fall apart with in 20k miles Yup..Ferrari ownership. One big party after another.
I'm at a phase and place where I'm considering more and more not buying one, and instead renting them. On the street rarely, on the track mostly.
