Hope not "asleep at the wheel..."as in accident waiting to happen!
and definitely not involved on the comment side.
I know, my 'Spanglish' goes off often times...:)

You are surprise because is normal and expected.
Everyone does this but what if the results are very bad that you do not want to say or do not want buyer to see?
He was very clear the engne has smoke, this is the serious warning

Sergio, I think it is being transparent. Smoke? Yes. But how much is too much?
Blipping throttle when the engine is cold, is not very smart.

That is where not only compression, but a leak down test would be very creative.
The difference between minor / major engine work.
I see it in my engines :)

    Regards, Alberto

The service ticket he attached is pretty telling. "Moisture present throughout." Brake calipers in very poor shape, not replaced. Oil leaking EVERYWHERE. Blue smoke on acceleration. Crystalized fluid in brake master cylinder.

Clearly this car has not seen a lot of care. Leads me to believe that Jon is correct, it's nothing that a $400K restoration can't fix.

I asked the seller for permission to contact the mechanic. DENIED, and I won't put Tony at SP in a bind by calling him without the seller's permission.

This one is unloved at BAT for good reason.

Odd, that this car with such a description, would be a 'reserve car'.

Often times on BAT, I'm struck by what is selling with reserve. There have been a bunch of fairly average Porsches on there over the last couple weeks, all with reserves, and I'd guess that maybe 30% have sold during the auction. (Although the high bidder and seller apparently work out a deal, post auction, often.

I think the party for average cars is over, at least on BAT.

I think that Jon's number of $400K to restore it is probably about right. So a L Series for $750 all-in?

Right on the button, in my opinion.

Remarkable how the auction market gets it exactly right - as long as there are enough number of participants.

The best transactions are the ones where the both buyer and seller can be equally satisfied. This was one of those rare deals. Congratulations to both parties!

That is a lot of money for a car that needs everything, maybe right down to the frame.

$750K all in for an L series car in a market that's moving down, not up. And you're two years or more out to get there with all of this car's needs. Who knows where the market will be by then, well, of course that means maybe you can come out ahead if the market turns back up, but that's not what I'm thinking is probable for the next 24 months.

With all due respect to OMGJON's spectacular work, this would be a great project for the non-pro. Unless there's some rust lurking in the body, the mechanical work can be done - after a lot of grease removal...

    Wait a minute……

Dave, is that the shop I am about to send my Dino to for mechanical and cosmetic tune up?

    $5000 labor for brakes?!?!?

I may have to formulate a different plan.
