Don't for a minute assume that any other company that holds customer information is any more secure than Optus. The key thing for average users to do is ensure that you have separate passwords for each bank account and utility account. Any account that involves money should have 2 factor authentication (login password plus a dongle or sms code). Also change your passwords every 6 weeks or so, or use a password manager app such as lastpass.com which is free for one device, $3/month for more. Remember also to change the password in your home wifi router regularly. It's sitting on a server at NBN and your service provider and is very vulnerable to hacking. Don't give your credit card number to anyone online, pay via Paypal wherever possible (of course one day, Paypal will get hacked) or do a bank direct deposit. You should strongly resist any requests to provide your passport number - that's your last line of defence against identity theft.
My comment was only for the crap service Optus provides up here and possibly in a lot of regional Aussie. As my work phone is an old style flip I don't have the issues involved i this or any other type of mobile data situations.
Interesting fact re this. When purchasing Urbenville I had an email come through asking to put the deposit into a different A/C to the one originally provided. Email looked legit until I checked the url/address...different. Contacted the REstate and sure enuff ......... You've really gotta have your wits about you nowadays.....
All good advise but it caused a major shjtfight with the woman at Bingara when I wouldn't give her my credit card info for the booking, said she couldn't make a booking without it, anyway, unfortunately for you lot I made it with no issues, unlike Wesley who threw the telephone at her ................. j/k he didn't do that , while we were looking Also be wary of people asking you to run Teamviewer of AnyDesk for access to your PC, several people in my street have done this and lost quite a lot of money when they were being "helped" to sort out their accounts by a "helpful" employee of Microshaft as their PC was causing issues on the internet Once they are on they run a script that will download all your passwords , bank details , log onto your bank and take the maximum daily amount in literally seconds. Check your account/s as often as you can for suspicious amounts and use ALL of the banks resources to keep your money safe, and as Ian says, use at least 2 factor authentication. It may be a pain but it beats losing all of your money
