So I just took a read of my clutch wear. Last year at 14.4k I had 25.6% worn and at 16k I am at 25.9%worn. So in about 1600 miles I wore only 3/10th of a percent of wear.

Good news, I'm getting the hang of driving an F1 without eating up the clutch.

You'd think I'd be happy, but because of my bad throw-out bearing, I am replacing my clutch while upgrading the bearing and some other parts since it doesn't make sense to pay all that labor and not start with a brand-new clutch for myself. So that is the bad news.

I guess the big question is, is there a secondary market for a used clutch with about 26% used? A new clutch plate is expensive so maybe backyard mechanics would want it? If there is I will ask for the clutch back and sell it on eBay or here. Or is it just not worth the effort (i.e. only worth $100 or $200)? Any money would obviously go into my car hobby fund and would not require spousal approval to use, so there is some advantage to selling the old part if there is some value in it.

    Thanks,
    Cheers,
    Corey

See what the old clutch looks like when it comes out, no reason it cannot be refitted if the wear rate is correct

We already ordered a whole new clutch setup and since my car is a keeper I’m having a bunch of maintenance stuff done due to age like the accumulator so it doesn’t make sense to put any old parts back in, but if it measures out to match the computer read of wear do you think someone else might want it?

That’s a tough one—- unlike a front engine domestic .. a clutch swap in the 360 is more$$$ so hard to justify using a used part ….

mod stick a used clutch in a Camaro but not in my Fcar…even if the measurements are ok…

Better question. Would you put a used clutch into your Ferrari?

I don't have an answer for you only a suggestion if you are changing the clutch. Replace the engine and transmission mounts while the transmission is dropped. Mechanic shouldn't charge you much for either. Check flywheel too. Also a good time to change out the water/oil pump as well for preventative maintenance.

That water/ oil pump is huge money to change, leave well along as can be changed with gearbox in place.

Change them out. Clutches are like brake pads, they do not wear down linearly. A brand new clutch wears slowly initially and as it wears down, the wear speeds up. So a 25% used clutch is almost 50% worn….

I would not change it. Put it in this perspective, how many miles do you put in a year? If you put back the existing clutch, how many years do you expect it to wear out until needing replacement? Let’s say you put 3000 miles a year, and assume it wear faster than what you currently experienced at 10% a year. That means you need another 5 years to get it to 76%. Who knows what might happen by then? You might have to take out the transmission again for other reason. Or god forbid you got into an accident and totaled the car while you already spend the money for the new clutch.

Throw it on ebay with a $1 starting price and no reserve. Whatever it sells for is what it's worth, but I wouldn't expect it to go for much. That's pretty much the only way to answer your question. As for me though, I wouldn't put a used wear item on my car unless the part was no longer in production.

I'd have no concern with fitting the old clutch if it was only 26% worn. I'd validate with a visual inspection.

This is interesting: (153) Clutch wear check after 8 years with hybrid clutch 2000 Ferrari 360 - YouTube FF to 6:00.

Over 16,000 miles over 8 years after a new F1 360 clutch was installed, only 6.5% of the clutch was used up. If this is correct, my thinking was that the driver probably drives similar to my habits which are no fast starts, pop into neutral and coast up to a red light, not using automatic mode, etc. (i.e.: drive like a freak'n grandma on her way to church).

This enlightened me as when I purchased my 360 11 months ago as the clutch was at 39%. My initial thought was I'd be replacing it in 3-4K miles.

    Thoughts on the above?

What is the current milage on the car..and do you have any previous clutch readings recorded in the history? 39% worn isn't anything to be worried about and you will get far more use out of it then just 3 or 4k.

Use auto mode every once and a while..it's helps with adaptation learning. And can help prolong clutch life. Avoid stop and go traffic until you are familure with the "feel" of clutch engagement. Avoid steep hills, underground parking lots..and minimize reversing uphill.

Dropping into neutral really doesn't do a whole lot as the clutch is disengaged at a light anyway. The car will put itself into neutral if you take your foot off the brake pedal anyways if you are in gear.

Thank you Tom, greatly appreciated. My current mileage 37.7K. The car had 36.5K 11 months ago when I bought it. It was that month that the clutch was scoped at 39% during the PPI. Great to hear I'll get many more miles from it!

As for the Automatic mode, I have yet to drive using it. What is the proper way to engage (yes, I know I have to push the button!)? When in neutral? Can I do it on the fly, say at a stop light when I am in neutral? When going from Automatic mode to the paddles, do I need to hit the button again? Please let me know. BTW, how can using the Automatic mode prolong the clutch life? That goes against much I have read.

    Thanks again!
