It all depends on what we consider an "underperforming" car. Sure Hamilton never drove for Caterham, Minardi, HRT, Haas, and a few more teams I could mention. It happened that he came in a good (top) team when he joined F1, so had a good car immediatly, capable of winning races, if not championship (which he almost did in 2007). Can we blame him for that? Landing a drive in one of the top teams put enormous pressure on a rookie, and he did rather well, all things considered. How many rookies challenge for the WDC?
During the Vettel years at Red Bull, McLaren had a good car, but not a championship winning car.
I would say the Mercedes this year has been underperforming for half the season, until the TD kicked in; until then, it was a dog.
Also, how many team mates Hamilton had between 2007 and 2021? Of course Alonso, Kovaleinen, Button, Rosberg, and Bottas have won races with the same car, but none of them gathered more wins than him over the period they were together, AFAIK. Far from it.

You could say the same for Schumacher, Vettel, Verstappen, just to name a few.

Ask Irvine, Barichello, Massa, Webber, Ricciardo and Perez about it !

That's the way it is; a team will tend to put all his weight behind who is considered the best driver.

The faster driver get listened to, strategy is taylored around him, he gets the best (latest) equipment, etc ...

Well, I'm glad to see this thread is still going.
I do find it funny that people don't understand why some hate Hamilton...

I wonder what happened to all of those people who insisted up and down that George would be forced to let Lewis through and team orders and blah blah blah. So much for that.

In fact there is plenty of evidence to show that Lewis played the team game by not challenging Russell on the starts and re-starts and that he controlled his pace near the end to protect the team finish.

Perhaps Russell is just faster than Lewis?

Or Mercedes realized that Hamilton is old beer and Russell is the new man

When Ham has his head on straight he can't be beat. Russel is good like Rossberg was good. We don't know if Rus has more mental game than Ross? Time will tell. Ross beat Ham 1 year to the WDC but it took every fiber of his being to do it. He was smart to retire after 1 WDC because Ham is still way more consistent than Ross and has a better mental game.

Hamilton took a back seat this year and spent most of the season trying to sort out the porpoising issues .
He kept testing different set ups, and concentrated on improving the car. That how unselfish he is.

Largely agree :) i mean, Hamilton knows that he can't resist the temptation to crash into someone he's passing at apex, so he "protected the team" by not attempting a pass :p

^^^ but seriously, if Hamilton did "hold back" for the sake of the team, not risking any danger or contact ... that's an admirable move.

2022 is the first year they are teammates and the score is one nil for Russell.

Ham's head not straight on the whole year?

Didn't Schumacher percentage of wins in 2004 was at 72%.

Lewis's highest ever percentage of wins was in 2020 with 64.71%.

I believe Max is knocking on Schumacher's percentage of wins in 2022.

    but I digress.

"I think it was a little unfortunate with Michael because we didn't have these references. Michael had a tough time sometimes with Nico.

"Was that because Michael wasn't as good as he was? Or because Nico was better than people gave him credit for?

"I think everyone recognises now that Nico was better than people gave him credit for."

Or Nico was just better as Brawn put it above

Yeah not the Ham of old. Loosing to Max on arguably a bad call really lives in his head. You can see this yesterday in the max/ham collision. Both would not yield. Ham is smarter than that and knows max yet he played max's game and was lucky to come away cleaner but probably lost the race to Rus because he lost site of the finish at the start.

I wonder if champions sometimes have those obstinate collisions in races that don't matter to a championship outcome to make sure competitors know that they won't be bullied off the line. Then when the result really does matter, competitors think twice about trying it. Both Lewis and Max seemed determined to have that collision, as if they were each sending one another a message for next year.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

If so, and Hamilton wins WDC #8 next year, I wonder if he'll do a Rosberg and retire immediately as reigning champion with more titles than any other champion. Early on in this season, he definitely looked like he didn't want to be here anymore, but he's persevered for a reason. I think #8 is it and then he'll be satisfied.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Yes it could be. More then 50% of the game is mental. 1st. controlyour own head. 2nd. get in your competitor's head.
