ok, thats an opinion....what car would you now exchange the 430 for, so as not to lose that value?

so nobody has a suggestion for a $100-130k car that will hold its value over the next 5 years?

Ross, tell you what. I'll take any one of these three and give you a put option.

Only problem is you'll have to catch me first.

Honestly..nothing. the F430 is the last of breed. It's rough..it's loud..but there is no mistake it's a Ferrari. I really like the way Ferrari progressively got better results out of the F1 gearbox where it's honestly a great thing to drive. You can feel the car working.. it does require some driver ability to get the most out of it. It is NOT smash the gas and go. It's the perfect combination of old school charm but with usability all in one package. And they are a very reliable machine once sorted.

They are simply a great car.

And about the Senna being hard to drive?! Rubbish! The Senna GTR is like a street car. It’s easier to drive than the FXXK which is very easy to drive fast. The F40? Heel toe downshifts have to be executed perfectly.

From your list, I would guess like many others the 430 will depreciate the least, if you’re looking for a car that might not depreciate in that price range, have you considered a 2011-2012 “gated” Audi R8 V10?

    ok.

i did not say the senna was hard to drive. what i meant was that it is a 'hard' car as in not much on creature comforts or luxury.
and i said that because plastique had an f40 and deemed it too harsh for his liking.
i am sure it is an effective modern track weapon, and easy enough to pedal around town - much like the f40 at pedestrian speeds.

Those Audi's are a great car. The suspension issues can be over come with an aftermarket set up. Once that's done..perhaps one of the best all around sports cars out there. I personally prefer the V8 manual over the v10.

A lot depends on the economy of course as values rise and fall with the overall market.

I would vote F430. Ferraris seem to hold value better than other brands in general, and even if values dip a bit, I would rather be stuck with an F430 than the others!

PS - since you own an F40, why so concerned with the value fluctuations of an F430? The F40 could easily swing by multiples of the value of the entire F430 if things go south. I suppose because you have owned it long enough you are way ahead but that’s still equity at risk. Just curious.

its kind of a thought exercise, and may be helpful to others.
i periodically get tired of the 430, and wonder about other cars i have not owned....and i have no emotional attachment to the 430, unlike the others, so i am more free to consider alternatives.

the f40 appreciation has covered many of my automotive mistakes of course, but i dont like to lose money on anything :)

I’m in a similar boat (sans f40!). I’m itching for something new. I haven’t bought a car in 4 years, but due to space constraints, would have to exchange with an existing car. I am frequently doing the mental exercise of what car I would trade for what. Choices are fewer nowadays too since I would only consider manual cars, and my small car collection covers most bases.

Easiest to replace is my daily driver 6mt cayman gts. However everything I like would be less practical as a daily driver (gt3, gt4), or maybe not much of an upgrade (emira, gt350)

Not an expert in car values but based on historical trends, Ferraris are more likely to retain their values over the long-term. Some models more than others, but even the “least loved” models tend to rise once they finish their depreciation curves.

Why not add the 456 to your list, just from a depreciation stand point, they have been trending up in recent years (even the GTA), but are now hitting the right age where depreciation is fully done. The M GT is a relatively limited production, only about 630 6 Speed cars made. The last of the analog cars, and 85% of the performance of the 550.

Also from the same time, for the same reasons, the 550 and gated 575 cars have already really taken off. If you can find a deal on one, it’s likely to be a good investment, or worth the money to get it back up to par.

The GTA won’t ever put your kids thru college, but it’s likely heading back towards a solid 75k+ car now with some nicer outliers. The 575 F1 cars will likely see the same trend in the low to mid 100s. Just a fantastic bang for the buck and all around great car.

To answer your question… I’d say the Aston Martin. A manual V12 will be worth its weight in the future. Although a 2017 may has some depreciation to go

i agree with all of this.
had a 456mgt for 9 years as my daily.
bought my mother a MGTA in the same colors after her mercedes burned up.
    so i am into 456's !

i have also been eying 550/575's for years. and would like to add one.
i think 575's will drop some more tho once we get into this recession a little further. right around $100k is a sweet spot for those.
but to me, these are additive cars and not substitute cars for the 430.

mostly this thread has reconvinced me to stick with the 430 again.
it satisfies the potential track weapon, hooligan part of the stable.

but the 575 is on the list.

There doesn't seem to be much love for the modern era, DB7 and Gaydon onwards, Astons in the classic market. Manual or not. Manual DB7s are a fraction of 550s, and been there for a while, they are much less valued than even 996 Turbos and GT3s, and cheaper than a good 996 C4S, which seems remarkable. DB9s are dirt cheap.

Ditto Vantages, even nice manual V8s. Manual V12 Vantages seem to fare better but are not in this budget. I loved the V12 Vantage S auto, fantastic car to drive, such character, but I fear it will go the same way as DB9 and DBS.

I have a manual 430, I see the F1 as steady and maybe dipping a bit, just because there are so many good newer two pedal sports cars that will be around in the market. From R8s and Gallardos and Huracans to 911s and Caymans and 918s and R8s and AMG GT and...a proliferation. I do agree with bakowsky that 430s are raw and special, 458 was a better car but not a more fun car at most road speeds.

I also have a manual 575 and am puzzled by the price difference with F1, and more so about price difference between 550 (all manual) and F1 575 which is a much better car all round. But F1 seems to have developed an unlove which may be hard to undo, I'm not sure.

I haven't driven a McLaren I haven't liked, most of them I like a lot, and 570 is great. But their values just go one way. I don't know why, but I would not buy any McLaren except a F1 and expect it to hold value.

911s continue to defy logic. If a 996 or 997 GT3 is in that range, it will likely keep value better than any of the other options. Not that I would take one over a V12 Vantage S but the question was about values.

the db7 is just a warmed over and better dressed jaguar xj that had been around for 20 years, and everyone knows it.
the db9 is a great car, but they made a lot of them, and it has been around for a while, and it is gt and not a sportscar......
the v8 vantage - they made a lot of them too....and then they got needy.....
the vantage v12 s is a special limited edition that is bonkers, so it has a chance :)
r8's are very well made, and work very well....but the design is plain, and they are a touch boring.
the gallardo is just not that great (except for the very last trofeo, my opinion, yours may differ)
huracans are like mustangs now that they have produced more huracans than all other lambo made throughout the entire history of lamborghini....altho it is a great car.

interesting to hear your opinion of the 575....confirms my suspicions

i cannot do porsches - thats my dad's domain. :)

Can't argue with any of that! Except maybe the DB9. I wouldn't say it's a great car. Good, maybe, and a big big step for Aston. From the warmed over XJS. I remember driving one on the media launch, to Scotland and back from London. It didn't thrill on the twisties and didn't have the soul of a 575. Looked great at the time. Not so interesting now, actually I think the 430 has aged a lot better.

    just opinions though
