Preference of the wing, or otherwise, is just that, preference, and completely subjective.

But yes, it was popular in the 80s

However, as with all things, with the passage of time, people who are interested in gaining knowledge of how things work begin to ascertain how they help or hinder performance, what their effectiveness is, and whether they are original or not. With this in mind, you'll notice there are a lot of Countachs without wings these days.

This document is quite odd in that it lists the overall length at 4410mm, which is longer than the commonly referred 4140mm. You would think this could just be a typo but the wheelbase, front and rear overhangs all add up to 4410! Joe, the drawing of the QV you posted in another thread with 4200mm overall length and 2500mm wheelbase seems much more accurate!

Went to the Haynes motor museum in the south of England last week and saw the red Countach LP400S3 they have. Boy was I in for a surprise. As a museum you would expect the cars to be tip top but this Countach was probably the worst and most tired I have ever seen.
Paint was appalling, interior has cuts in the leather. It has no engine and gearbox, maybe that is out for repair, I don’t know.
Had the classic bodywork fail by the rear vents, poorly fitting panels, I could go on. Very sad. I hope it gets the treatment it deserves one day.

This illustration is based on the prototype, slightly different dimensions, the document is from the factory itself, it takes account of DOT bumper add-ons as well.

I knew this car 30 years ago when it lived in West London right off Edgware Road with the previous owner, before it entered the Haynes Museum.

It was a tired car back then!

Agreed, it would be a nice complete candidate, and thus a straightforward restoration should ensue.

Luke ,that wheelbase is correct I spent 3 days measuring an Alpine LP 400 s in 1987 and the wheelbase was definitely 2515 I measured it at least three times, I also measured the front and rear panels not sure if I measured the front and rear overhang but probably did it will be interesting to see if they match the numbers in that drawing

Does anyone have any further information on the progress of the restoration of LP400 1120116 that was being restored at Cairato in Azzurro Dino Metallizzato?

Luke, if you have Instagram, you can follow them at @cairatimilano and see photos that Massimo posts regularly of the progress. Here are some recent photos taken after the paint was cut and buffed. There are also some recent photos of a Countach engine being built and readied for dyno testing, as well as restored bits ready for assembly...they might be for this car as well, I am not sure. I posted them below here as well...beautiful!

This LP400 is going to be Spettacolare.

Amazing color, plus unique specification of steel body and flat roof.

Yes, Azzuro Dino Metallizzato, a color also used by Ferrari in-period, when spending what it costs to fully restore a car these days, the original color is prudent.

Absolutely agree. During my search for my Countach, many suggested that I just buy any car knowing I was going to restore it. Their thought was that I could paint the car any color I desired. But, my priority is to be absolutely true to the originality and purity of the car, which includes every part, component, materials, and color.

    Dear Victor,

was it not exactly this blue Countach that nobody wanted to hear to your words, that the original car was actually different equiped than how it is brought into the configuration now ?

    Best regards

I think he's talking about the steel body and flat roof, but I believe the color is correct.

  18. Steel body, as in the whole body?

That would be quite the divergence from normal LP400. But the color looks fantastic!!!!!

At a circuit in Europe, however I think the LP500S used is a different one from the one you are perhaps thinking of.
