I don't have all the answers but according to the data the top was 2014 with a steady decline in the past 5 plus years, perhaps this will level out, we shall see.

Oh god, and I'm sorry, but I did not realize 1120262 RHD/LHD. What on earth....!?

What is the history with the steering column swap, when? It was LHD before this resto?
    That is no easy task!

LHD since after the Mardikian Targa modification, IMO if the car were restored in the true sense of the word then making it RHD would be job number one.

I'm no expert car collector but I can't see anyone with a million to spend ever wanting that Rod Stewart car no matter what you do to it. I agree that the LP400 is going down in price, but this particular car is not really relevant since it has a reputation as a hacked up disaster. Also, I'm not convinced that past celebrity ownership has any effect on price with these cars, unless it's Walter Wolf.

The LP400 is beautiful for sure, but it doesn't get as much press as the flared cars and is not as recognizable as a poster car. 400s, 5000s, and QV are the most famous and recognizable Countach.

    Good points.

However, I think that nowadays many collectors feel that that if the car goes back to the original manufacturer for it's official restoration program to subject it to a total restoration, then past sins are washed away and any previous negative provenance becomes an interesting footnote in it's history, I have seen instances of this with fabled historic Ferraris & Porsches, and Lamborghinis should be no different. So far as the car was not crashed & burnt and we are taking of the original chassis & engine, this notion applies IMO.

As regards ownership, I do believe that celebrity ownership can make a significant difference in value, especially if the car now exists exactly as said celebrity owned it. In this case, Rod Stewart is not an average celebrity, he is a Rock Superstar, one with more linkage to Lamborghini than any other, as underscored by his Miura > Countach > Diablo > Murcielago > Aventador ownership. Sales data shows collectors having paid a premium for a number celebrity personalities thought to be enthusiasts of fabled Ferraris & Porsches, and amongst Lamborghinis, I have seen premiums paid for cars owned by heads of state, singer musicians, captains of industry, sports stars and more besides, and I happen to know that cars owned or built for the owners of the Lamborghini factory would also warrant significant added value. The Wolf cars will always have special value but IMO it's not just because of who Walter Wolf was, but because his cars were quite different.

It's not just about the demand, it's mainly because of the offer. The number of LP400 coming to the market in the past years is beyond control. Some cars are even being resurrected from the dead!
And from a limited number of 150 cars max, it scares investors.
Don't be fooled, a true Countach enthusiast just bought a LP400 at 1.1M Euros a month ago, privately.
Those LP400 going to podium auctions recently are not the best examples (0016, 0062, 0260, 0262). And, again, that terrible 0262 advertised as "Rod Stewart's Countach" has nothing about Rod at all anymore, hence the poor result last week.
I'll soon have for sale a 1974 LP400 that will definitely exceed the Million when sold. Those cars are too different between them to make an average price. Each of them should be considered individually.

The cars that have benefited from celebrity ownership seem to be anything Steve McQueen. I'm sure there are a few, limited, others. It does add to the novelty, but value I'm not so sure overall.

Let's phrase it that way, a good car sells better privately, in auctions you can never check a car that thouroughly than on privat treaty.

The McQueen stuff has brought extraordinary premiums, but his cars are not the only ones that have brought a premium, and in any market, if someone will pay more for something it has added value, although this may not apply to everyone. As they say it takes just one.

I also think the best cars generally never come to auction in the first place, and based on the data I collect, the sales results via Private Treaty are generally higher than the numbers achieved at auction.

    Generally, but not always.

IIRC Bobbyaviator's (or a user name close) car. Yes older photos mixed with newer.

    Older youtube video.

Can't be Bob's car. His old one had gold wheels and his new one is bone stock and low mile. This one is heavily modified by someone who thought it would increase the value but will soon find out the opposite is true. I will say it does sound like fun to have a Countach with a good radio and nitrous. "It will never break" sounds optimistic given that it has a car alarm and non-stock stereo. Any kind of post-factory electrical work causes these cars to break constantly. Then you're on a mission to find the problem with bad factory wiring diagrams and even scarier stereo shop mods.

Huge money! It was in very poor condition. That being said, great foundation for a full restoration. I tried to buy the car a few times from the former owners, but was not able to give them what they wanted. When I researched the VIN with the factory I believe it was also Rosso Siviglia new.

My honest opinion is any 400S, 5000S, or Pre-Anniversary Countach under $300,000 today is a deal. We will laugh about these prices one day.
