A meme I have heard many times over the years, from Ferrari owners and also Ferrari execs, and occasionally here, is that the 2 seater V12s (particularly the front engined ones) are perfect for an evening out at La Scala with your wife. Or variations on the theme: Paris, London, etc.

I get the idea, that a dream is to "arrive" at a glamorous location in an elegant front engined V12 looking like a million dollars or an Italian James Bond. But, as the owner of a front engined manual V12 two seater Ferrari, I would love to know others' views on:

    - was it ever feasible to drive to a major city opera house and walk out and into the opera with, I guess, valet parking? Otherwise how did this even work?

    - if not, did anyone really drive to La Scala, Paris Opera or Royal Opera or the Met and park their V12 Ferrari several blocks away in a lot and act as walking scaffolding for their wife while they walked there in heels, while wondering fi anyone would steal your jewellery/watch? And if so, what was the point of that?

    - These cars are not exactly made for inner city driving, so why wouldn't you take your Bentley/driver/a taxi?

What created this meme in these first place? I get driving V12 Ferraris a thousand miles in a few hours, and I get being chauffeured in your Rolls in cities, but I don't get the V12 Ferrari-opera-city meme at all. If I go to the opera, all things considered, taking my gated 575 there is probably the worst transportation option I can imagine.

    Help appreciated.

V12(or other F-car)/opera combo works fine in Los Angeles.

This is the first I’ve heard of this fantasy scenario. It isn’t something I’d be comfortable doing, either physically or from a security viewpoint. One must always think of the lady first. A lady dressed for the opera isn’t going to find alighting from your Ferrari (of just about any type or era) a particularly elegant maneuver. My preference would be to hire a limousine (and not one of those vulgar stretch jobs that are usually hired for transporting high school kids to their prom [U.S. prom, not the ones in London]).

The next night take her to a Michelin starred restaurant in the countryside in your Ferrari. Give the valet (if there is one) a £100 note to leave it parked in front….and take the keys with you just to counter all temptation.;)

First off..who really likes opera that much. I don't mind some of it..but to sit through a 3 hour show..nope.

Second..you would have to be some kind of idiot to valet park your pride and joy no matter what it is.

3rd..sounds like a fantasy dick swing. Big shot pulls up in the fancy Ferrari..everybody oos and aahhs etc..pure masterbation.

I’ve heard the meme and its an odd one, for sure. While we live near a major city (San Francisco) a Ferrari is about the very last vehicle I would ever consider taking there. Plus, Ferraris and valets are completely out of the question as well for me as well.

That said, there is a bit of truth to the meme: my wife is not an innate petrol head - she appreciates the beautiful shapes and designs and, over the years of seeing them through my eyes, has appreciated the amazing engineering that goes into our cars. We've taken several wonderful road trips in our 550 that we have both thoroughly enjoyed, including stints of spirited driving mixed in. She loves the power, lines, and luxury of the 550. However, I don’t think she’s been in the Speciale (polar opposite of the 550 in our garage) more than twice, neither times were really enjoyable for her.

So yes, if I go for a drive in a Ferrari and my wife will come along, the 550 is usually it - although never to the opera (at least not in a Ferrari).

And to add detail, in LA people who are Founders Club members at the Music Center do not valet park. Founders parking is reserved, indoors, safe, and private enough for modest ingress and egress from cars.

Certainly opera is an acquired taste requiring longer attention spans, not for some, but if the taste is acquired opera is in one's bones whether live or recorded.

Haha I didn’t intend to start a debate about the merits of opera. I don’t love it myself but my wife does and evidently many people do and many do not.

But I still wonder how this meme first originated. Was there a film many years ago involving some Italian heartthrob skidding to a stop outside La Scala in a GTO, opening the passenger door for Sophia Loren, and sashaying inside, regardless of parking restrictions. I get the visual appeal, if so.

V12 opera> any other opera, thus, you will just drive around for a bit, then go home.

    All problems solved! [emoji4]

I went to an opera once with a friend, I didn't want to kill myself, but I didn't want to go back in after intermission either. There was no expectation of SOTH afterward but I had never been so one so...

Honestly, the scenario sounds like a bunch of rich folk wanting to impress other rich folk by sitting through something most everyone hates just so they could do what rich folk are expected to do. Show up in a beat up S-10 and see if you truly enjoy the opera or the entrance more. :D

Done it many times. Every single time valet did one of 2 things. Let me park in the front, or asked if I wanted to park it? I've always just let them park the car. The way I see it, if you're uncomfortable with damage with the car, then bring a different one that you're okay with. Some events don't have valet parking, so in those cases, it's the parking garage near by. Never had an issue with fear of being robbed since it's a big crowd going to the event from same parking garage. Finally, not meant for inner city driving? I honestly don't understand that, it doesn't get much worse than downtown San Francisco, never had an issue driving around crowded cities, have you ever been in central London?

I recommend going to Chez Quiz in Chicago. Be sure to wear your Abe Froman T-shirt.

and don't worry about the valets, they're professionals.

I dont care about the movies, with that being said, going to the opera and owning a Ferrari , let alone driving it there , just does not match up lol Now maybe getting in your Ferrari, and playing some Van Halen on your high end audio system, while ripping down Sunset Blvd to go grab something to eat, that matches up, and or flying up Ortega HWY to get to the canyons in San Diego county, that would work as well ! lol Leave the opera up to the WASPS driving in their English pieces of crap.

Gino, if you are as Italian as your name, you should perhaps note that opera was pretty much invented by Italians, Florentines to be precise. Not WASPS. Less than 100 miles from Maranello, 500 or so years ago.

Paul, I live in central London. My Ferraris are manuals. I do the school run and duties in them sometimes, but they aren't my chosen transport for getting to the Royal Opera House, which is surrounded by traffic jams. The clutch on the 575 isn't the lightest, and there's not a lot of joy in that journey. I would take my Mercedes if I could park, but then I wouldn't be able to anaesthetise myself with champagne, so I walk or take an Uber, neither of which really conforms to the romantic myth.

I guess it depends on where the opera house is located. Paris, London, Sydney? Nope.

Some of the best shows I've been to (operetta, admittedly) were in an open-air amphitheatre in the Austrian wine country 5km from the Hungarian border. I would drive the living daylights out of my car on the way there, but have being single it'd probably ruin the effect a bit. Lol.

That said, most spectators arrive by boat.

That looks spectacular. Where is that, Neusiedlersee? Great roads there for sure.

You are right, and on the same theme, the Passion Play at Oberammergau (ok, not really an opera)and the Ring Cycle at Bayreuth (very much opera) would be worth going to for the drive alone. I wonder what the best opera house is to drive to, if not these.

Yes indeed. Mörbisch am See to be exact.

I sense the beginning of a challenge here...I'll be keeping an eye out for opera houses in my future travels now!

Seems like there are quite a few interesting ones here: https://www.classicfm.com/discover-music/latest/world-most-remote-music-venues/

That's a good list. Red Rocks in Colorado and the Val d"Orcia are certs for the best opera house to drive to. You don't even need the opera.

A drive from your Austrian venue to the Tuscan one would be an opera in itself, in a V12 Ferrari.

I went to the Crystal Hall in Baku once. They do have a Ferrari dealership in town but you wouldn't want to drive a Ferrari there really.

my guess is that it was a ferrari marketing effort generated meme. think i may have even seen something like that, that they put out for the 599, maybe even the f40.

    but its a crock.
opera,, or any other entertainment of that kind, is usually in the middle of the city where cars are either not allowed at all, or are restricted, and parking is far away and not secure and as you said, the wife has to teeter along for a mile - forget about it.

btw, for opera, i can also recommend going to verona in the summer and seeing it in the colloseum - for Aida they use the animals from the local zoo !

i can also recommend a couple excellent restaurants if needed ;)
