Hello, have an opportunity to purchase an TR from my neighbor with 28k miles. Has not been started for 3 years. Body and paint are in very nice shape, interior is all complete, just some wear on a few parts. He said he would sell it to me for 55k usd, he needs it out of his garage asap as he is moving out of state. What do you guys think, worst case scenario I am thinking a full engine rebuild.

It doesn’t need an engine rebuild.

was it running fine when it was parked??

usually it will need a major service.

Diff exploded? Gearbox broken? I always think positive ;) (Although at $55K maybe even the Dismantlers would be interested even if the drivetrain was seriously fubar.)

Buy it - assuming it was running and in good shape when parked all you need is a service, battery, fresh fuel, and a few odds and ends.

You have approx $50k in equity on day one to address issues.

Keep in mind if you’re new to exotic cars and the brand ensure you’re comfortable spending way out of the norm for routine things.

I once tried to explain this (high Ferrari maint/repair costs) not to scare but inform a gentleman who wanted to get a Ferrari. He responded in a smug tone that he has owned several Mercedes, so he knows about expensive maintenance. Naturally - I smiled, and quietly walked away.

If the car is solid, just been sitting....it would be foolish NOT to buy it!

If you do your own work, it would be hard to lose. Go for it, if it seems sound.

If you pay others, it could easily be a bad decision.

In a different thread, we saw a 133k Boxer bill for ‘just’ mechanical work on a basically sound car.

133k plus 50k is enough to buy a pristine example without the headache.

Why can't I have any neighbors like this? ;) I would immediately be renting a storage space since my garage bays are full. Not sure if you have any familiarity with Ferrari in general, and this would be quite the first model to own.

From experience (I bought a very neglected but running 91 TR for $20k during the Global Financial Crisis) you will bond with the car and learn a great deal from the experience of bringing it back.

The fact that it was cheap will also make you more likely to work on it yourself. It is not actually that complex; once you have taken one apart and put it together, you will understand it so well you will use it more.

    Congratulations, you will enjoy it.

Glad to see you got the car. Did your neighbor mention why it hasn't been started in 3 years? Anything wrong with it, or did time just get away from him?

The bright side is Ferraris make most everything else look cheap when it comes to service costs.

Well I flushed the tank and filled her up with fresh gas, and an oil change. New battery and she fired right up! Going to do other fluids, and I'm sure its going to need a major. No idea on the last time it was done. Also the 1-6 cylinder light was on, sounds fine and idles fine. Will do some research on that

Pull the motor for a major ASAP if you do not know when/ where it was previously done. A thrown or torn belt will ruin your day…. and your bank account. Personally, I wouldn’t run it if its history was sketchy.

    pls take vincenzo's advice.
go for a major and a belt change asap.
you have no maintenance history on that car.
you are lucky it all runs but now dont tempt fate.
