Who Owned a Dino WAY BACK WHEN (Pre-1985-ish) Any Original Owners?

That’s some serious rolling stock behind the Cab. I gave up on bikes about 20 years ago when traffic got crazy and the healing process slowed dramatically. My last one was an R1100RS. The old Porsches were great (see my profile page) but honestly my current Boxster delivers the most fun/$. Anything newer than that (2008) is too digital for me.

Is anybody organizing driving tours up there? Years ago I used to run the Highlands Classic.

 

2nd owner of 02984. Bought her in Poughkeepsie, NY in 1975 and drove her 1800 miles to Clovis, NM where I was flying F-111Ds at Cannon AFB. $10,600, 18,000 miles. Traded her towards 365 GTB/4 14009, $5000 difference.

Taz that’s awesome. I’m torn in my somewhat ‘real world fantasy’ between a Daytona and a Dino, being the last two affordable Ferraris with chrome bumpers (classic). How do the two compare back to back? Why did you trade the Dino? How was the Daytona by comparison and what did you sell it for? I’d love to hear your thoughts as you also own the only modern era Ferrari I like bing the Maranello. Thanks!

 

Ken- Totally different driving experiences so hard to compare. GTB/4 had way more hp and torque, brakes were not as good as the Dino because of the extra weight. Sound of the V12 was even better than the Dino, especially since mine was minus some of the many mufflers. Daytona did not ride quite as well as the Dino and cornering was more work with slow steering. Worm and roller steering was heavier than the Dino's rack and pinion. Interiors were similar, but the Daytona's was more luxurious and had more room. Daytona was much easier to work on, but had twice as many of everything, points, carbs, valve shims, etc. Dino was prettier, Daytona (plexi-nose) was meaner looking. Traded the Dino because I always wanted a Daytona and a V12. Still love V12s even though I have had V6s, V8s, and V12s. My 575M has 6-1 headers and sounds like she could compete at Le Mans with the exhaust valves open, with a really high-pitched scream above about 4000 rpm.

Not rich, so all of mine have been daily drivers.

 

I was in Watkins Glen in 1985 for the Ferrari National with my Dino (bought it the year before, still have it). Here's the Dino Class being judged at the Concours:

Black.

It's being repainted now (37 years after I last had it painted). The headlamp covers are coming off for the National, but will probably go back on after.

Pietro, we lived near Via Nomentana when I was born. Don't remember the exact address, as no one left to ask.
Then we moved to Via Monti Parioli 4 for the next 9 years. Then we moved back to El Salvador, but travelled often back to Italy,
as my mom still lived there.

Your dad probably bought the Dino at the dealer near Muro Torto, right by Villa Borghese.
I remember they had 2, maybe 3 Dino in the tiny showroom.

Ciao ragazzi. Talking about Rome brings back so many wonderful memories. I lived on via della cameluccia and via trionfale back in the early 70s, did my usual trips to both the new snd used car dealers.

Back in 1971, i was in chicago, had a friend who worked for Bob Mckee engineering. They had a 206 with a broken transmission. Car was silver and wonder what happened to it? Anyone know?

Terry, thanks for your comments, its really interesting to hear. I wonder how you would have felt about the Daytona if it was fitted with electric power steering below 20mph and better brake pads? Do you think that the 575m with the MOVITs and Fabio exhaust make it more exciting than the Daytona? It would be great to get more driving impressions on your car as it must be one of the most exciting to drive Maranellos out there!

 

The Daytona was more exciting because it was the fastest car in the world back then (1978) and mine sounded really great. It was also the only Ferrari in Clovis, NM and nobody knew what it or the Dino were. The 575M is a better car, but the 365GTB/4 is a better Ferrari. The 575M is way faster, corners way better, has Le Mans quality brakes, and the air-conditioning works. Not as many places to let it out here in TN, though. Roads in Eastern NM and Western TX were deserted back in those days.

 

I bought mine in May 1976 in Rome. I'm the second owner. The original owner's name, if I remember correctly, was Ivan Russino who lived in Rome. I will keep it until I do the final check-out, which hopefully won't be anytime soon. The first picture was just a few minutes after I bought the car. The second is the next morning, "Oh my God. What did I just do?"

I decided to put my years of ownership paperwork in a binder for the next owner-whenever that day comes. I have owned her since 1974 and thought you might find a few of the older photos interesting. My first real sports cars were 911's and 356's.

The first few photos of my Dino were about two months into my ownership. I sold my '69 911 to buy down the loan I had to take but I was making about $6,200 a year salary and had just bought a house so this dictated that any future sports cars I bought had to be used. Two months later I bought a 1955 Speedster with original paint and no rust. The Speedster was my daily summer car and for winter I had a very rusty 1960 coupe that I welded in a sunroof I had removed from a wreck.

In 1976 I bought a '74 Carrera with the sugar scoop and the 911 "Safety" strips down the hood and the Carrera script on the side. It was a strange color I called "Crab ****" yellow. My daily was split between the Carrara and a '65 cabriolet I had restored. Restoring 356's became my passion.

In 1985 I had gone to the factory and saw that they were producing turbo look 911's. This was a dream come true for me since my insurance company would drop me if I bought a Turbo. So I once again remortgaged my house and bought a black-on-black Turbo-Look Targa. I always bought Targas because I could take the passenger seat out and remove the roof to use it to haul lumber. I would have preferred a coupe but my daily driver had to be functional.
