No, I’m sure some feel that way, but in the years I attended CC it has never lacked for important cars. Many in that position show their cars generously without that sort of insecurity. The “Everyman” description is yours, not mine. I don’t think anything about the event could be considered to be like a roll-up c&c, nor is anybody advocating that it should be.

 

So would you say there are more important cars entered now vs in the late 90's?

The Classic never was an "everyman" event IMO but I don't think the quality of entrants had anything to do with the crowd. In fact I'd say based on my personal experience there were far more "important" cars on display in the early days when the field had much more people. Hell, the track event had an insane amount of important cars/patrons back in the day and that event was open to the general public at $10-$20 a head.

 

At $100,000 each we had them at hill climbs and at club track events. At $500,000 we had them at club shows. We needed to make space for them all. At $10,000,000 plus we still see some at the more exclusive events. See a pattern?

But let in 1000 teenagers and they will be gone.

How many actual owners have you asked why they attend or dont attend?

 

I believe Rob is spot on.
It appears Canossa/Cavallino events are (and perhaps latter has always been) aiming to cater for very wealthy collectors/owners and to make them comfortable attending by providing an environment with very limited (or nonexistent ?) access to those with lesser means and/or willingness (i.e. “riff raff”) to spend enough for lifestyle exclusivity at this level.
Makes sense to me.

P.S. As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve never attended Cavallino and very likely never will (nor specifically want to).
OTOH, I don’t much care to attend C & C’s or most other poser fests either and never have.
I love and always have driving my cars much more than showing off them to others.

Even $1,000 a ticket wouldn't keep them out. We have more $50,000 millionaires and hustlers here than 1% ers. Every club, event, etc. is full of them. They have the uniform to look the part and have no problem dropping 5k a night (on credit) for bottle service so spending $400 to pose as a exotic car VIP for the day is nothing. The Breakers is full of them every weekend too.

The only possible way to weed out the majority of shady wannabe's here would be to charge 10k a ticket. Even then, you'd still get a boat load of them. Lol, Madoff went to the most exclusive Palm Beach events too.

Exclusive just means the crooks in attendance have better skills and are dressed well.

I prefer the field less crowded with people as well. I don't personally see a correlation in the quality of cars though in regards to the Classic. The amount of important cars was just as significant when attendance was higher as it is now IMO. Therefore I believe supporting a proportionate younger, controlled crowd to attend is important to our future and bears no negative consequence on the quality of entrants. In fact, I remember mentoring a group of high school art students (who were comped) at the Mar a Lago event a few years in a row. Didn't affect the level of cars enter one iota and did well to inspire the next generation.

I personally know 6 owners who have shared why they have displayed or not thru the years. More if we just count attending as a spectator.

 

I can confirm that there were more judges (who had judged at Cavallino in the past) that were not invited to judge at Cavallino for 2023.

 

whatever the prices are, please keep out the strollers and dogs.

 

Exactly why the GTO reunions are private invitation only events.

 

What about Factory authorized Strollers (official taylor-made option of the new thoroughbred suburbans for soccer moms ?) and red book certified dogs named Enzo, Luca or Sergio acquired from the Factory authorized kennel network ?

 

Again folks. This is capitalism. If you don't like what Cavallino has become, don't go. Vote with your dollars. If the organizers lose their ass, they'll stop.

Or, better yet. Put on your own show. Get commitments from enough owners of important cars, and the rest will come.

 

Well, that isn’t going to work. Some will complain but attend, some will complain and not attend, Either way is ok. What I haven’t seen a lot of here is, “Man. That Cavallino Classic, huh? It’s better than ever and I’m really enjoying the higher prices! Well done!” Nobody is saying they can’t do whatever they want within legal and ethical limits, but that doesn’t mean anybody has to like it,

 

Anybody who pays money is giving an implicit endorsement of the New Cavallino.

 

Perhaps in a legal sense, but if true then anyone not attending is implicitly not endorsing it.

I do and have always done so.

As a lifelong vintage car enthusiast (w/45+ years of active participation) more into driving/traveling and restoring than displaying or posing with them, 9 out of 10 times my attendance at car shows or events are either for display/logistical assistance with client cars or having been gifted a spectator or VIP entry and I don’t happen to have other plans.

I just don’t see CC worthy of spending my own time & $$s to travel to attend. Pebble Beach, which I’ve attended numerous times, I’ve only paid for an entry once, the first time there, in 1993.

I wouldn’t mind attending Goodwood Revival someday, but only if it coincides with other travel plans to the area/region.

The rare occasions I attend any C & C type events are usually if some friend(s) visiting from abroad or out-of-town express specific desire/interest for any (of the countless) we have in this area.

And as I recently mentioned in some other thread, years ago I had a mild desire participating in one or two organized major (vintage) driving rallies/tours, but after learning of all the double-standards/hypocrisies/politics involved and other silliness behind them, lost interest.

That would be someone like me. I can easily think a lot of better uses for my time & money.

 

This is also my current state of mind.

I have so many other interests I can devote my time to now it really takes a special car or occassion to lure me in. I'm blessed to have been to so many events that there isn't much I haven't already seen. I still love modern exotics but I can see those any day of the week here in south Florida. I guess after nearly 30 years of events there isn't much that moves the needle (unless it's on the track) Lol, first world problems!

The Breakers had a problem with them targeting all those high net worth guys and had a major crackdown.

Lol, our local events are still loaded with them. If you look like you have some money watch out!
