Hard to imagine how driver missed 2 dressers coming right at him with the lights shining him in the eyes. Gotta wonder if the idiot was texting or doing something other than driving the car.

Looks like the blue Harley hit straight on and did nothing other than hit brakes. Not really within the realm of defensive maneuvers.

The sad part is in some cases a crash is going to happen. You just try to mitigate it.

It was 3:00 pm on a clear day. This is why I hate to ride in traffic. I'd much rather dodge deer on back roads.

I think you're right. The first one hit the passenger side front and the second guy sideswiped the passenger side rear. See pic from another angle.

That said, I know many of you love big Harleys, but I don't. Every time, I ride one, I feel discombobulated. Once a motorcycle gets over 500 pounds, it is a different breed of cat. You really have to know what you doing to ride one safety. So-so brakes, squishy suspension, under powered motor, and 800+ pounds, you have to know what you're doing. I talked to a biker once who told me you had to pull on the opposite handle to counter steer.

They are very well evolved to ride all day long. Did Rt 66 last summer and enjoyed every minute in saddle. As far as power goes, as they sit on floor yes Harley is very smart about that. It is sold as a self propelled starter kit. I have a video on computer at work you need to see. I'll post it when I get there.

It appears you need to be an above average rider to really control one. That's what scares me when I see these guys rolling down the road as a pack. This can't be good.

No question they reward skilled riders but no more than a Hybusa. How many headstones exist because someone had enough money to buy one?

No motor vehicle rewards stupidity and riding beyond your skill set knows no brand.

Video too big to post. Point is I have ridden some seriously fast Harleys but with that stone age engine making them powerful and pass smog and noise rules just aint going to happen. They have a brand new engine that is a nice piece, 20 years late but a very cool modern piece. Now they just need to put it in the whole line up and put the old lump in a museum where it belongs.

Bottom line, cars turning left in front of you or pulling out in front of you are the number one killers for motorcyclists. You must ride with situational awareness. You must ride with the attitude that people want to kill you. Anytime I see a car stopped or slowing in the opposite left lane, anytime I see a car stopped or approaching on the right, I start looking at their tires and planning an exit. It takes a lot of the fun of out of riding, which is why I don't ride in urban/suburban areas.

The strategy to use would be to increase your following distance to the Suburban. This gives a better visual and more time for the oncoming car to see you. AND you see them. Also, a slight "weave" in your lane will also get more attention.
The biggest problem with "SMIDSY" is either attention blindness, or hiding behind the A-pillar.

As you said, you learned. We are always learning, when we ride. Whether we've been riding for 60 seconds, or 60 years...

I've also replaced almost every stock horn with a higher decibel aftermarket model.

I'm not shy...or I wasn't... If I saw u thinking about the left turn in front of me I was on the horn.

    Also helpful w NYC Cabbies.

I grew up at a time when anything with an exhaust just a little louder than stock on anything was good for a ticket. These days it seems no one cares anymore. I don't know how many MC police have told me specifically they encourage loud exhaust on MC's so cars will know they are there. I hate very loud cars or motorcycles but I do have a moderately loud exhaust on the Harley for that reason. I also ride like I am invisible.

I'm not a believer on the loud exhausts making any sort of difference. I know when I've been in a car with the windows up and the stereo going, I pretty much never hear a motorcycle exhaust, no matter how loud. I think people who want loud exhausts use that as a way to justify it more than anything.

Horns are a different story, though.

I'll repeat, I hate loud exhaust. Both Ferraris and our Lamborghini all have stock, quiet exhausts.

I do hear motorcycles and according to police departments so do other drivers. Most of the police Harleys I see do not have stock exhaust either.

I haven't seen a police Harley in years! Does Harley still make police bikes?

Every police bike I have seen in a long, long time has been a BMW RT. And those aren't very loud.

I can tell you, that when I am sitting at a light and the person in front of me is not moving, looking at their phone when the light turns green, all I have to do is race my engine and they snap out of it and get going. Same for any of my Harley's or my Indian's.

make sure you cancel a turn signal. Following cars will eventually ignore it.
