Folks dislike particular brands due to bad experiences, that's the whole point of branding. It took decades for Hyundai to go from the bottom to near top. I'm sure folks today, still think all Hyundai are junk cars. The telling thing is Leno resented he had to buy a Mondial to get a different model. This sentiment went back as far as the 80s early 90s. I'm positive Beverly Hills Ferrari didn't care who he was. Karen didn't like that, still doesn't. I watched that video. Gives me chills down my spine. Amazing car, amazing story. Always appreciate it when you share this piece of automotive history. Glad Jay was able to help document this.
..... and the 'cherry on top' / 'last nail in the coffin' for him buying a Ferrari was the Classiche certificate; paying Ferrari to prove to prove it's a Ferrari. "I just get tired of that" .
The Classiche does have some worth. I would say the biggest is Ferrari inviting you to Concourse events to show your car, say Pebble Beach. I went through the process, and I can tell you they are thorough. Even things like a aftermarket muffler will disqualify attestation. Now does the $2,900 have a positive ROI if this $132K Mondial had it or not? Don't know.
"Gives me chills down my spine. " **** My wife watched with me and was practically in tears when Adm. Phillips said he was giving up the Ferrari...something to the effect "Don't do it"
I don't know. Ferrari is not a fan of customers that talk badly about the brand. Jay said for him to deal with Ferrari, they need to treat him better. Occam's razor sounds more like that bridge is burning at the bottom of the chasm. That explains this all more than anything. Sure would be par for the course with in comes to 'professional' relationships, hmmm... I don't know what Leno's expecting, given I'm a schmuck nobody that has always been treated with respect and kindness by multiple Ferrari dealers, including the one Jay wanted to roll the red carpet for him. I've netted positive (I got more in monetary value from a dealer, then vice versa.) What more do I want? I've yet to come close to having a similar experience at many other manufacturer's dealerships. Some folks cry Ferrari 'sold out.' Yet this is the same company that will not allocate to billionaires. (or Jay, no matter how much he makes fun of Mondials.) It can't be both.
His feelings aren't hurt, he's telling the truth. Most people here would never accept the way Ferrari and it's dealers treat a customer or potential customer. Why bother being a part of that. He doesn't need to and neither do I. Certain vintage Ferraris continue to appeal to me, but I continue to be amazed by the hysteria over "special editions", or even regular production models. I'm even more amazed by the need many owners have to add tens of thousands of dollars of gingerbread to their cars, often proving that nothing exceeds like excess. At some point rational behaviour will return and maybe then Jay, and the rest of us will regain interest. But I'm not begging for a manufacturer or dealer to take my money. I worked hard for it and deserve more respect, as does every customer.
Leno said point blank he doesn't like how Ferrari treats him; insofar as that does not affect his feelings, I don't know - I've always felt the two go hand in hand. I also never claimed Ferrari didn't treat you or Jay Leno badly. On the contrary, why would I even try to assume you or he is lying? I firmly believe you both are treated poorly. Why would I contest that? I never got mistreated, so I can only speak from my own experience. As far as bespoke add-ons and excess, you decry. Yes, I yearn for the good old days when Ferrari represented frugality and humility, an era where people were not forced to walk into a dealership and buy a car.
Ferrari is like the Miles Davis of auto brands. It doesn’t give a fck what you have to say or think, it just wants to produce beautiful results.
The only beautiful results Ferrari gives a fck about is measured quarterly. It couldn't be less Miles Davis.
Jay did have one of the best lines about Ferrari, he said Ferrari builds the entire car around the center ashtray! Very funny when you think of the classic cars.
I was treated badly at the dealership when I was negotiating to buy my old 360. The dealer got up and walked away to assist another customer. I guess he was a higher roller than me. I still bought the car because I wanted it. That dealer went to Mclaren. The new new one did exactly the same thing to me several years later. Go figure.
Yup! But what Miles never said is I'll put you on the waiting list for "Kind Of Blue", but first you have to buy "******* Brew" and "Sketches Of Spain"...and yes, I know my chronology is out of sequence
I get where Jay comes from on this…..in 2005 I had a series of horrible experiences at Ferrari Houston and haven’t stepped foot in there since.
I'm a nobody and was always treated like gold by Ferrari of Denver even back in the days where actually buying a Ferrari was merely a dream and going to FoD was simply a Saturday ritual with my Dad. When I actually bought the first of 5 cars from them they treated me like I was a top-tier customer- And still do to this day. All the cars I've bought were pre-owned and mid-level cars. Same with Ferrari Fort Lauderdale- They always treat my SO and I amazing when we include stopping by there as part of our vacations- The only car I've bought from them was my Hellcat. I'm sure there are dealers out there who treat lower end or potential customers poorly- and that is sad and not acceptable- But they are not ALL that way and people should not judge a Marque based on bad dealer experiences. I'm a Leno fan and he does not seem like the "I'm entitled" type- Anyone I know who has met him in a car environment verifies that- I suspect his annoyance/observations about Ferrari are more about him pontificating that anyone should be treated properly- regardless of the Marque of their status- and he's using his platform as a famous car guy to make the point versus it being personal. Cheers
If you had a business in thensame environment and situation... You would do the absolute same. Why wouldn't you reward the customers who have spent more with you through the decades?
Then that means they have not cared since the start. You act as if Fiat was not a public company. Or that Enzo started selling road cars as a hobby.
Well said, sir! I know this will rub some folks the wrong way here, but some sow the seeds of their own; how shall we say, 'mistreatment' by a dealer - Look around this forum. Jay's PR folks are excellent, sort of like Camila. It's a great accomplishment to go from once one of the most hated men in America (for stabbing people in the back publicly) to your favorite grandpa car enthusiast who wouldn't hesitate to give you his own shirt off his back. I just finished a biography of John Steinbeck, and the same thing happened. If there is one thing I learned, folks have short memories, and PR is more powerful than truth.
You see it a lot here, @ Puro, more and more. Folks that hate Ferrari take the time to express it to a Ferrari enthusiast forum. I've been fascinated why? I deconstructed the behavior here.
