355 Oil Tank Dipstick Help

    Hi, First post here but i have been using the wealth of information on the forum while i restore my project 355 spider that i bought as a disassembled car. i have spent the last 5 years piecing it back together and sourcing all the missing parts.
    I'm ready to attempt the first start of the engine which i have fully rebuilt myself. however i am missing the oil tank dipstick 145112 i have the cap just missing the rod. i need to fill the car with oil so this is holding me back. would someone have a few minute spare to take a measurement for me on their dipstick from the cap to the min and max levels so i can make a temporary one?
    any help appreciated.

    The MAX marker is 170mm from the cap mounting point, NOT including the nut and washer. The difference between max and min is 41mm. The stick extends about 20mm beyond the MIN.

    I would get a second opinion, though. I don't know if my dipstick is calibrated properly.

    Only check the oil level with the oil running or immediately after turning off. My dipstick wasn't even wet when I removed it (car has been sitting for several months).

    OP, a dry 355 engine takes 10 quarts of oil. Typically in an oil change you drain/fill 9.5 quarts. You can't even check the oil level until the engine is hot, so just fill it with 10 quarts and fire it up. You don't need a dipstick right now.

    *And by "fire it up" I mean crank the engine until you see oil pressure, then fire it up.

    With an engine that has been rebuilt, remove the spark plugs (or the wires to the ignition coils) and crank the car until you get oil pressure before attempting to start the car.

    Paul, does your stick shaft have a locking nut. It's hard to tell from the photo.

    Your min/max separation looks shorter than mine. I rechecked mine, and confirmed 41mm.

    Yes also 41mm. One of these is from a 95 challenge tank and the other a 99 F1, Both sticks look the same and have a locknut on the end. The tape starts at the inner most face inside the cap.

    That's how my techs check my oil at the track.

    I would also disconnect the injectors or fuel pumps/fuel pump relays to prevent unburnt gasoline messing the spark plugs or catalysators.
