Not wild about the Gold but the price is right.
You can buy speed rated tires to fit and paint the centers another color.
I bought 14" Campys to replace my 390's. the FASTEST speed rated tires
    from Tirerack. Total $700.

Love the ride and the tires are faster than the law allows.

Oh the seller told me he includes the lug bolts.

Be careful with who you recommend, I recall some folks having trouble with this vendor in the past. Also, he admits these wheels are not in perfect condition....

The bolt pattern is the same, but the offsets change. You may need to use spacers and different size tires than what the wheels came with originally. It can get rather complicated and you would want to do some searching on this site to see specific examples of 308's with various other wheels...while a matter of one's personal taste, I will tell you that to ME, the 16" QV wheels are just a "classic" and very agreeable look for the 308. The just look "right" to my eye on the 308. Anything else just seems to make the wheels standout too much, and draw attention away from that beautiful shape, rather than simply compliment the look, like the 16" QV wheels do.

Didn't know he was (is) a dealer.
Just thought he has poor taste (the wing) and the color -gold- on the centers
    of the wheels.
I thought BBS is a good brand and 17" would have more tire choices.

I was/am stuck with SUMIs for a speed rated tire on my 14" Campys.
They ride fine with no to little tire noise.

I am going to 16" BBS with spacers -note I ased the seller of the ones I reccommened if the wheels needed spacers, he replied NO but he was including lug bolts. He also says the tires are not up to normal street use.
So I thought he came accross fairly honest (but the claim of increased milage
with the wing gives me pause - but marked that up to youth.

Sorry, I was just trying to help.
    stephen

ps Tirerack had 390 for 308 $200 each they had received the tires Nov 2004.

    Hi Stephen,

BBS makes a good wheel. Make sure it is a "street" wheel.
Some are of a special light weight variety for the track (or show), not recommended for the street because they are easily bent or damaged from hazards.

    Good luck, DJ

I've been doing some shopping on the Tirerack site and found that the Kumho Ecsta MX tire outrates the ES100 by a good margin for about the same price. The numbers and reviews were very positive for the Kumhos. Surprise!!!

The ES100 rates 19th in it's High Performance category and the Kumho MX rates 2nd!, second only to the Yokohama Advan NEOVA (at twice the price).

Was the 308 gtsi rims ever painted a different colour other than silver? I have seen a white 308 and it has white rims and the owner says that it's original paint.

I would imagine it could very well be original white paint but not necessarily FACTORY paint.

Find a set of used 16" QV rims - OEM, they're on ebay all the time. Don't go aftermarket.

I too have a 1980 308GTSI that was purchased in San Diego. I have these 5 spoke wheels with no raised markings, but are painted black. (See pic). I was wondering if it would be worth it to have these wheels restored? When I couldn’t find any markings of brand, I thought they might be knock offs, and therefore not be worth restoring. What I’ve read on this thread makes me believe some 308s were sold without cromodora wheels new? That said, are these wheels valuable enough to restore? Or should I just buy replacement cromodoras?

Are there any markings at all on the back of the spokes?

Factory 14" wheels aren't valueless (but also not as desirable as the 16" wheels), but, IMO, you'd be better off selling them as-is, and let the Buyer hassle with the refinishing (which can be a challenge because of the high Magnesium content).

And what about any markings/part numbers/etc. on the back of the spokes? I can't recall any previous discussion about aftermarket reproduction 14" wheels, and don't know if some factory 14" wheels were just unmarked -- but that would surprise me a little if there are some.

Yes, what Steve says about the back of the wheel. Many dealers offered this paint scheme to customers even though this wheel looks like a hatchet job.

I actually can't recall ever seeing that pattern with the spoke ridges also painted black. My recollection is that these are the more common style of 308 wheels with black paint added by the Dealer (and some like the last one with the lug area and protruding hub also black, but all the ridges still silver):

+1 my 78 308GTS had the inside of the 14" Cromodoras painted black. First thing I did when I acquired the car was refinish them in all silver.

As long as you lightly sand the paint this is not such an horrendous job. I just don't see what's the point in going down to bare metal: aside from the mandatory green primer, more often than not, this aggressive process scrubs details. The black paint that was applied to this rim is obviously a quick and dirty job, no doubt the coat of paint is easy to remove.

As a side note a 14'' rim is obviously going to be much more comfortable on a daily basis (less vibration, and steering the front wheels is another story on 16'').

Nothing on the back except this gridded, rectangular symbol (see pics). For $1100 I can have these wheels reconditioned. But if they are knock off, I’ll probably buy legit used ones. I currently have the 5 spoke silver/gold Etoile wheels. They’re a bit corny.

I think if you knew how to "read" the boxes that it would indicated the month (one of the 12 boxes might have some sort of marking in it). I'm not an expert on the 14" wheels so can't add anything else (but it still surprises me that it is so "unmarked"). Still the cost to cast a wheel with steel inserts is not cheap (and I can't recall any 14" F wheel "knockoffs" ever being mentioned before - so would guess it's legit).

The OEM Campagnolos had a silk screened logo, which would have bben "lost" all that painting.....ugh.

Still the Rectangle Dot Box is indeed the date of the casting.

I would carefully get that black paint off, stop with the Factory silver, avoid repriming unless dmaged, and paint back.
Maybe $1000 as you say because most Body Shop Painters hate wheels.

Our have pressed in lug bolt bushings.....CAREFULLY examine those and surrounding material for any cracks.
And mask them off to avoid painting..
These wheels are now quite old.

    HTH
