I just got a 1986 Mondial. During the shipping from Los Angeles to Virginia the clutch pedal went out. On inspection, it appeared that the clutch slave cylinder was the source of the failing clutch. I replace the slave cylinder with an Alfa Romeo 164 part that people on Ferrari chat said was the same part as the Ferrari clutch slave cylinder ( they look exactly the same and it bolted in perfectly). I reused the push rod from the original slave cylinder.

I did all the steps including bleeding the system. The system is completely filled with the new Dot 3 fluid. The push rod moves and partially disengages the clutch but it does not appear that the clutch is completely disengaging because it is very hard to shift into gears.

Does anyone have thoughts on a remedy for this problem?

I'm not familiar with your car, but I have replaced/rebuilt the slave cylinder on my 330 GTC several times over 40+ years. Bleeding of the line might very well be your problem; it's a bit tricky. On my car there is a spot where the line makes a bend that is higher than the master cylinder. Air tends to accumulate at the top of the bend when bleeding in the normal manner. This makes for a soft clutch pedal. The solution is to presurize the clutch fluid reservoir and have a helper bleed the slave cylinder until all the air bubbles are gone. This is the only procedure I've found that actually works. It forces all the air out of the air in the high bend.

Did you check if the internal diameter of the new slave is the same as the old one ? When bigger diameter, it needs more fluid to move the same distance.

Call Bill Young in Phoenix. Buy the correct Mondial slave cylinder. It is not expensive.

The only Ferrari parts place I know of in Phoenix is GT Car Parts. Does the Mr. Young you speak of reside there?

I appear to have the same issue. I am in Phoenix. Does anyone have photos of where this part is?
I want to try to repair it myself. If not, any recommendations on a repairman?

I got my master and slave cylinders from. A W Italian imports in NJ.

The parts were a perfect fit and the people were very helpful.

Both the master and slave are doable by a home mechanic. The power bleeder was an important part of the job because it is hard to get air out of the lines.

There are a few techniques that I learned along the way that would have saved time and effort if I knew them in advance.

Please message me if you need help.

    Frank,

It appears this is common. I can message you direct but, if you want to share so others can see that might help the community.
What did you do, and your 'wish I would have known'?
