As many of you know I recently moved from San Diego to Spicewood, Texas and built a new shop where I continue with my passion restoring Dinos. I always have an ear out for Dinos that fit my need. About a year ago a guy stopped by with a corvette asking if I restore these. I had a Dino parked out front. I wasn't sure if he knew the difference. He told me he heard about a Ferrari that was in a warehouse in Llano, Texas. I'm out in the boonies but Llano which is 45 minutes west of me is really in the boonies. It only has 2 main roads. Last week I was passing through Llano I decided to find the mystery car. It didn't take long in a small town to find it. Under cover was a 1973 Dino Spyder with original campagnolo wheels and daytona seats that had been sitting since 1997 when they moved from Laguna Beach to Llano, Texas. The car was originally sold from Hollywood Sports Cars to and interesting guy working somewhat with the Movie Studios and other ventures. He sold it in 1985 to the current owner. I hit it off with the widowed owner (76) and we struck a deal and today I picked it up and brought the 45 minutes to my shop in Spicewood for another restoration. Originally Rosso Chiaro with Tobacco interior. All is original except a crappy paint job done in the early 80's with a red nowhere near the original. Now I get to decide on the new specs for this car and some lucky person will get it when I'm done.

I am not going to pretend to know about all the hidden Dino’s in Texas, but I have known of many.

This Dino was no where on my RADAR. Never heard about it, no rumor, no thoughts.

This is an amazing find, that was lost for years.....

AND, the first owner is more than some Hollywood/LA guy, he is an amazing person that patented all kinds of cool camera and filming stuff. I would not be surprised if we find out all kinds of more cool stuff as this thread grows.....

He did invent the first personal watercraft called the Wet Jet. I actually owned one and was very happy when I got rid of it.

Old money = old Ferraris, and in this case, maybe new money = new Ferrari (at the time.)

About the only tie in i can think of between Cali and Llano would be the wine industry.

Great find, and love to see it take shape!!

As Shelby used to joke: "No that's not Ferrari Red, we wrecked it last month, that's Ford Truck Red!!"

That one looks pretty good. I know of another not far from there. Closer to you actually that claims to be a one owner car and is basically a self propelled set of worn out everything. Nice guy but last we spoke he had a rather unrealistic idea of value.

Most do have an unrealistic idea of value when it needs everything. I would love to check it out if you care to share.

Even though a Dino isn't a real Ferrari, I'm sure they go for at least $2MM a pop.

Let the fun begin! New specs will be a azzurro metallizzato 106-A-32 with cuoio interior. US sidelights and rear reflectors delete and possibly change front indicator light to Euro. Daytona seats all cuoio with no black stripes and black carpet. Radio, AC, Ferrari script and Cavallino delete. Will keep original campagnolo wheels and refurbish. Of course there will be the haters changing from original specs, but the great thing is most that I do are not for customers so I get to do them the way I want!

I love middle of nowhere Texas towns (I have family in Texoma) and their town square courthouses.

    Great story and find!

There is always a new problem when taking apart old cars. I had hoped to have the interior completely stripped today but someone put the steering nut on with an impact gun!! So the hub will not come off as of yet. I have a hub puller on it with a lot of pressure and no movement. Going to let it sit overnight with the hub puller on and some PB Blaster. Will see what tomorrow brings!

Have you tried to shock the puller with a hammer blow?

I love seeing all the “what if” period Ferrari color combinations! I’d love to see a 246GT Dino in BRG!

Pretty sad since he clearly has no idea what you have done for the Dino community.

If you're going to dismantle it to the bare metal and restore it, that is the moment to consider a colour change. When mine was done decades ago, I went with Rosso Dino.

Boring "re-sale red" on a 246GT is a little meh.

I look forward to watching this progress

ps: You lucky, lucky bast*d ;)

Jon, ignore this fool, I would say a vast majority of people support the work you put into these cars, myself included. Let’s be real, most are not pristine virgins when you get them… Keep restoring them your way:)
