355 F1 gear change fluid check

Do you check the gear change fluid when the engine is hot or cold? My handbook does not advise.

 

Get it quite hot and ck it then. The fluid actually expands quite a lot so if not checked very hot the resevoir can over flow. The same goes for the power steering if your car is so equipped, come to think of it same should be said for the motor oil as well.

Can someone recommend a good f1 transmission fluid for a '99 355?

I don't know why, but the WSM (page D-14) refers to the "Engagement and selection self-learning procedure" as the "Octopus".

I think most owners would think of the octopus as the network of hydraulic lines coming from the F1 Power Unit.

Why are you having an "octopus" check done? Is the car currently driveable? Have you changed any components?

 

Reviving an 18-year-old post MUST be a record.

 

Just need a question answered that will help, didn't have the issue 18 years ago, thanks to anyone else that can advise

I use Mobil 1 75W90.

It is not clear to me if you are asking about F1 fluid or gearbox fluid. I have no experience with F1 trans but have used Redline, Royal Purple and Motul in my old 355. Motul Gear 300 75W90 was by far the best, including smoother cold 1-2 shifting.

 

It's for my F1 transmission

 

There is no difference in transaxles for F1 and 3 pedal Ferraris except external devices for the shifter and clutch. All call for a 75W-90 synthetic. The F1 system itself, not the transaxle, uses ATF or other hydraulic fluid.
