1966 330 GTC jack and tool kit question

I know there are a lot of threads on this topic - I've read them. I've also read all the great info on Kerry's site and on Tom Yang's site. I've also seen the detailed info from Parker Hall.

But - I have not found a color picture of an early build 1966 330 GTC original tool kit (or at least one that I'm sure is original and from an early 330 GTC). As best I can tell, the kit was similar to the 275s - single black vinyl bag with 2 straps, blue scissors jack, grease gun with the flat handle, etc.

My car was one of the first 330 GTCs built. The manual and parts catalog (I have both originals of those) shows a single bag and I've been able to somewhat verify that the early cars indeed came with a single bag.

But - before I start an eBay and other sources quest to build out a tool kit, I'd love to see some color, medium res or zoomed pictures of an original tool kit, so I can try to verify what I'm looking at. Some questions I have:
- original scissors jack - blue or yellow? I believe blue.
- grease gun - tubular or flat handle? I believe flat.
- color of lead hammer?
- black or chrome pliers?
- Beta Auto No. 55 or Beta No. 55 spanners? I feel like either would be correct, given timing of my build.
- etc etc.

Can anyone please help me out? Feel free to PM me if you are more comfortable with that than posting them here.

I believe (not certain) the photo below is an original "single bag" tool kit from a 330 GTC:

If so:

1. Yellow
2. Flat
3. Yellow head with grey and blue handle
4. Chrome
5. Beta No. 55

I believe two wood handle straight blade screwdrivers are correct, also blue rather than yellow Battaini. Missing front hub puller(32) and long bar for rear hub puller.

Thanks peterp and 375+. The manual indeed shows 2 wood handled flat-blade screwdrivers and 3 plastic handled (orange or red?) phillips screwdrivers.

The rest looks like I'd envision it, though I'm not sure on the jack color. Were the yellow ones Battainis like the blue ones? Or another make?

I have seen at least 15 original 330 GTC/GTS toolkits. They have both blue and yellow jacks. The "judges" may prefer blue jacks, but the cars came with both colors, though the blue jacks may have preceded the yellow jacks.

 

Is the proper "period correct" Pirelli belt the blue one shown in post #2 or the yellow with red lettering in the picture below? My guess is that yellow with red is more period correct, but it seems like the repros tend to recreate the blue style.

The Blue Pirelli cover is original for sure. Can't say definitely about the yellow one.

I follow up this thread since I have a question on the grease gun finish for my 330 GTC, 1966, single tool kit bag, flat handle grease gun.
Since impossible to find an original grease gun for reasonable price, I just bought a repro one whereas both taps and flat handle are brass, which doesn't seem as original finish.
As far as I see, particularly from your pictures, that grease gun seems to have a natural cast finish for both taps and flat handle.
The cylinder body, I can't be sure?
So could you, or any Chatter who knows, tell me how was the finish of the grease gun (maybe different for cylinder and taps/handle?).
Was it natural cast Al or CAD or Ni plated, or maybe natural brass (yellow)?

Jean-Paul, The grease gun finish: the barrel, the flat wing handle/screw, the end caps - all are typically nickel plated.

So it is Nickel.
All pictures of "reported" original grease guns do show a "greyish" aspect which would be the state of oxidation of Ni after circa 50 years.
Some people have reported also CAD plating for this grease gun which, BTW, was applied on many hardwares of a 330GTC as trunk and hood latches, etc...
So, for this accessory, supplied by external vendor to F/Pinin, Nickel was an alternative.
For my new repro grease gun with bare brass caps and handle, I think I will have it Ni plated.
If not wrong, Ni deposit can be done chemically or by electrolysis, this later solution being probably the best even if not the cheapest.

Jean-Paul, I believe the correct plating for the grease gun is bright nickel electroplating. It is not "electroless" nickel. I have not seen cadmium plating on 250, 275, or 330 tool kit grease guns. As you note, the tool kits were likely from an external source and have no relation to other cadmium hardware found on these Ferraris.

Thanks a lot for your feedback. Upon your reco, I will have all the grease gun components plated by an electrolysis workshop for best result, easier than CAD due to environmental regulations in Europe (same as USA).
Then I must find the flexible extension (Zerk fitting).
Nothing original on eBay, and I see that Kilimanjaro offers, but no Zerk tip on the picture on their website?
Since relatively newcomer in the F connoisseurs for my "new" 330GTC, I have been looking to some of your threads and see that your knowledge is great.
For my 330GTC, I have still some little details to fix up to reach the original design of the car, which is my hobby/pleasure since I don't concourse.
As an example, based in France, I can't find the black ribbed overflow hose (7x18x800mm) from radiator to expansion tank (currently plain rubber).
For instance Newco supplies this macaroni for breather, but not this small diameter.
In case, if you, or any Fchatter, would know where I can get it, highly appreciated.

it confirms that the grease gun was Nickel plated, here of course oxidized greyish.
BTW, I am still looking for the 3 red plastic screwdrivers which are Phillips head (large, medium, small) as of spare parts catalogue.
As well as the flexible hose for grease gun with Zerk nipple fitting for the 330 GTC 66 period.
I didn't manage to find it. In case some Chatters knows about, greatly appreciated.

Jean-Paul - I'll take a look at mine again this weekend. Haven't had a chance to pull it out. My grease gun is original, with hose. Pretty sure it has the nipple too - and still has grease in it! I'll check my belt again too - I think I have the yellow/red one. But it's been awhile since I've looked at my tools.

Yes, on eBay, 99% are not original and 80% are bad repros.
But many of the official vendors of these tools are offering so so repros, as well (for instance dichromate plating instead of CAD, etc...).
BTW, it is strange to see that the 330GTC grease gun was nickel plated, duly confirmed, whereas, when looking to the 330 2+2 IAC/PFA Judging book, it is reported CAD for this latter car, for a similar period of time.

Yes your hose is equipped with Zerk nipple fitting. So I am carrying on searching how to get a good repro for it, and, on another hand, original screwdrivers (yours are definitely red with the 3 Phillips heads!).
Indeed give some fresh air to your tool bag and contemplate your treasures...

Where can the 330 2+2 IAC/PFA judging book be found? I'm aware of the GTC book, but haven't seen the GT book.

Clete (the author) says an updated version is coming in March 2023. For some reason, I’m excited about that

 

One of the experts should comment, but the document above is for a GT330 2+2 not a GTC330. There are some differences between the cars. In particular, the GTC has a transaxle that, I think, requires a special tool which is included in the GTC tool bag.

The title of this thread is 1966-330-gtc-jack-... which evidently confused me.

 

Jean-Paul - So - I was going to dig out my tools today (they are stored in a bin with other spare parts I've collected, but it was a beautiful day so I decided to just drive the car instead. And, of course, my battery was shot. After a quick trip to my local parts store and an hour of fiddling, I had the battery swapped and the car on the road. Felt great to get it out again. I promise - I'll enjoy my tools again soon and see if I have any spares (I had started building a bag and collected some originals before my car and I were miraculously reunited with our almost entirely original set).
