    HELLO
    I own a 2011 california.
apparently my drive shaft is bad and needs replaced according to the ferrari dealership
is there any one here that can tell me if it easy to swap out or is there some things a person needs to know. i seen a photo of the shaft and it seem pretty straight forward but i thought i better ask .
i can get a good used one on ebay rather then pay 12000 or 8000 according to the dealership
YES I ABOUT FELL OFF THE CHAIR

Torque tube or half axle? Big difference in price.

Driveshafts usually aren't that terrible to replace. Half shafts, on the other hand, are a bit more fun.

How many miles on your California and what exactly are the symptoms that you are experiencing that make everyone think something is wrong with the drive train?

I had no idea ,but they said there a vibration at the rear of the car when just taking off, plus when the engine is idling, they said it was the drive shaft, the rubber boot is ripped they say, and oil has come out plus the bearing are getting jambed so it not working properly. I wouldn’t think they would just assume

So what is your plan here exactly? Instead of pay the dealer, you are gonna buy the part used on eBay and bring it to them and/or install it yourself?

If your main question is: "is this job easy"... the answer is no. I can tell you that - no matter what the job is - there's no such thing as an easy car repair job, especially not on a Ferrari and definitely not when either your half shaft and/or your CV joint and/or maybe a driveshaft that transmits 450 HP is involved.

Normally someone in a position to accomplish this type of job themselves wouldn't be here asking these types of questions. Do you have any sort of previous automotive repair experiences? The type of job you're outlining on your California isn't overly complex, but it's definitely not easy either.

I am having the drive shaft sent to the dealer and they will install, but I need to see photos of the one on the car to understand what there talking about

So the vibration is there at idle as well? That doesn't sound like driveshaft stuff.

Well that what they said , he explained that the roller bearings get jammed because the oil gone and boot is ripped, so moisture gets in and pits the bearings
As I said I need a photo of all this

So you don't know the difference between the half shaft vs. the driveshaft, but the Ferrari dealer is allowing you to supply the parts on a $10,000+ repair job?

Good one. You almost had me going there for a while.

Unless this is a Ferrari repair shop located in Pakistan or India perhaps.

Yeah well that ain't the shaft they are talking about.

What's weird is that Ferrari dealers have parts counters where they can look up the actual part needed to repair your almost F1 level technology filled car.

I'm going to say again, no Ferrari repair shop in their right mind is going to allow the customer to supply the parts. Even in Pakistan. This nonsense wouldn't even fly at your local Kia dealer.

I think this entire thread is wrong.

Good luck on the repair. I cannot add anything more.

Let us all know how everything turns out.

He told me they have to take off the bottom pans off the car and heat shield and probably have to remove part of exhaust to get the shaft out

Ok , well I can guarantee you the Ferrari dealership is putting the drive shaft on that being sent to them , I have no reason to make up this , I will verify that they are referring to the drive train drive shaft or you can call it rear propeller

To answer your question it is not difficult to remove the torque tube that connects the engine to the transmission. If you have access to the underside of the car.

You need to remove the under panels, the middle section of the exhaust which is connected by slip joints and clamps and a couple of brackets, and a heat shield. You can then unbolt the shaft.

The hardest part of this job is getting the exhaust to unslip due to corrosion and the sealant used on the joints and getting the shaft to disconnect from its mating service, there is just no lip to get leverage.

There us nothing special about working on a California. If anything it is much easier than my BMWs. Everything is just easier to get to.

You can search my posts for a link to the workshop manual. I have posted it a few times.
