Whom said "A fair day's work for a fair day's pay"?
I don't think working over in The States for the RAAF would involve dining at restaurants, be more airbase canteen..DID YOU TIP?
Whenever the “tips” discussion comes up I always remember our first trip to China in the mid 80s - were were warned NOT to tip as it was considered cendescending... Here, I just round up to nearest $5or $10 dollars unless their is something special to thank them for.
I 1st went to HK in the early 60s as a child, I don't remember anything, but in 1970 when we stayed a week with friends the Ingels who ran Jardines, we never tipped, I can remember my grandmother, who often traveled to HK once a month for business, saying it was NOT expected. Nothing about being Condescending ...it was just NOT expected.
The problem is that you don’t know where it stops in the States. I once caught a taxi and when I paid the meter rate the driver said to me, ‘that’s for the taxi, now you need to pay me”. I felt like saying to him if you had told me when I jumped in, I would have been happy to drive. A friend also told me that when you check out of your hotel room you should leave a tip for housekeeping. So I’ve paid $200-$300 USD per night for a room and I need to pay extra for cleaning because the Hilton hotel is doing it tough. I do understand that’s their culture in the States, but it does frustrates me how this has taken over the world and expected everywhere.
