SF Shield Decal Value

I have two original SF shield decals that were used on factory race cars in the ‘50s and ‘60s. They are water-transfer type, not stickers with adhesive backing. Dimensions 20 cm x 15.3 cm. I acquired them in the mid-‘70s. I suppose they would be of interest to anyone restoring a vintage race car. Does anyone have an idea of their value?

Yes I’m aware of that. I didn’t want to post in classifieds yet since I’m just beginning to ascertain the value. If there is a more appropriate place for that on this site, I would appreciate knowing it.

With modern photoshop, scanning and printing methods once the dimensions were established a sticker/ decal like that could be reproduced very easily and cheaply.

Having said that IMHO $30-$50 per sticker I think would be the maximum asking price to someone that was a collector or restorer.

 

I wonder if Ferrari restoration experts have employed modern techniques to reproduce water-transfer decals. I’m sure the cost would be more than $50.

 

They wouldn't personally.

The task would be outsourced to printing experts.

It's not hard to reproduce those decals with 100% accuracy, and can be done very cheaply. That being said, those are originals, so who's to say what they're worth??

Case in point, the clock tag from a Dino 246 / 308 GT4 is something you can find a 100% accurate reproduction of for a cost of $40 to $50 (which is crazy for a piece of paper the size of two postage stamps). But, find an original clock tag and expect to pay $700 to $1000 (which is even more insane).

So your decals could be worth thousands to the right buyer.

 

i have several clock hang tags available……all original and genuine. $700-1000 is accurate.

 

It really comes down to dollars versus reward.

Things that can be easily reproduced to 95% of more of their original specification tend to have less value than those that can't.

Would you pay $1,000 each for a set of original decals when a reproduction is 95% similar in nearly every way for a few hundreds bucks and to the naked eye is the same.

I've seen both original and reproduced clock tags and other than a slight bit of patina which varies from example to example the good reproductions are almost identical.

Where as other items which are much harder to replicate like original Schedoni suitcases, etc are worth big money to enthusiasts because they can't be replicated to a high standard.

 

Pop them into an auction and you will discover but in todays climate I would agree that a higher level would be most likely.

 

I believe the factory race cars had painted on shields... for the most part. perhaps in the 60's they moved to decals?.... Today the ultimate is back to painted shields... that is the way to go.

 

The painted on shields were first used on the Alfa Romeo team cars that were run by Enzo Ferrari’s SF.

 

some guys are crazy for vintage, original items. I would venture to say the right buyer would pay much much more than the estimates here. I have sold Non DOT 1967 Corvette tires for multiple thousands where exact reproduction tires are available for 250 bucks. The tires are for judging purposes only, but guys would fight over them. GLWS.

 

FWIW, I believe that Miniguy's decals probably originated with Chinetti Motors. The ones SEFAC used came from an Italian supplier, so the instructions printed on the reverse are in Italian. I have seen these offered from time to time, typically for around EUR 80-100.

As others have mentioned, these decals are something that can be reproduced accurately, so I suspect that they are something where having a period item carries no real advantage for a restoration. In fact, it may be the other way around, since a decades old decal is likely to suffer from a certain degree of physical degradation.

 

Thank you. This makes a lot of sense since the instructions are in English, which is something I wondered about. Your suggestion that they came from Chinetti is probably true since I bought them from a guy in Staten Island in 1977. I would add that they are in as new condition having sat in the original mailing envelope in a desk drawer for the last 46 years.

 

The most likely buyer might be a collector of Ferrari ephemera, not necessarily someone who wants to attach it to a vehicle. In that case, confirmation of origin is paramount, even to condition.

Just as an FYI no points are added or deducted for original date stamped tyres in the current ICJAG standard of judging.

All you get buying 40 plus year old tyres is a car that feels like its tyres are made out of wood.

 

I have restored a number of vintage Ferrari's , shown them at Pebble Beach, won 1st in Class, as well as the famed Hans Tanner Award, when it existed at Pebble Beach Concours which was the finest Ferrari of all the Ferrari classes combined, and I would never consider any thing except hand painted shields on competition cars, as was done back in the 50's and possibly in the 60's by the Factory.

Now that I’ve spun up some of you on decals, here’s something else I would appreciate input on. In 1978 my wife commissioned a piece of stained glass from a local artist and presented it to me for a 35th birthday present. Just wondering if it has any significant value among Ferraristi. Although the tricolor proportions and shape are not correct, the rendering of the horse is of high artistic quality IMHO.
