My Challenge Stradale ownership has not been going how I had hoped. The many problems I have found out with the car since getting it has unfortunately just been growing and growing. All of the mechanical things, I can handle on my own and actually enjoy doing. I am just about done with all of them. Electrical problems though are unfortunately over my head.

The F1 light came on a while ago, and to keep it short, I have ran codes, the TCU does seem to have failed again, turns out is has been replaced 1-2 times before (found out after looking at service records I received after buying the car) so there is obviously an underlying electrical issue, I have been having Ferrari of San Antonio help me over the phone with things I need to test to diagnose it and according to my contact there, many of the readings I am getting are odd, the ECUs have been replaced once in 2006 (found out after looking at service records I received after buying the car), the power windows have randomly not worked since 2006 (found out after looking at service records after I received after buying the car), and now have started doing that to for me, the reverse lights stopped working which apparently happened over 10 years ago (found out after looking at service records I received after buying the car), and now they have started working again but are on permanently when the key is turned on. Anyways, I believe this is all showing me that there is an underlying electrical issue.

Anyways, I am working on getting a new TCU through warranty as the last one was replaced right before I bought the car, and between a mixture of a simple lack of time, and me also not being an automotive electrical diagnosis expert or even armature, I believe it is time to find a Ferrari specialist that I can ship the car to for them to diagnose it and fix it. I know to experts, solving problems like these are easy, but for someone like me who still feels like electricity is magic, I'm in way over my head. It is a problem that has obviously been going on with the car for a while, and I am the owner that will finally have this issue properly fixed instead of just covered up. Then I can carry on with taking car of the items I am capable of handling.

I have been talking to one shop in the Mountain View area recommended by a member here, but while they do excellent work and work on Ferraris, they are not a Ferrari specialist. Any recommendations on a specialist with lot of 360 experience somewhere on the west coast (I'm shipping the car) would be great. I appreciate all of the help.

Wouldn’t Rifledriver be the go to in Austin?

No real knowledge to offer but in the past when I hear about multiple electrical issues it seems like the first order of business is to look at grounding issues.

Good luck…..and one good thing is that you can get back money spent on a CS at resale after a few years. I have that same comfort margin in my two cars (Lamborghini Diablo Roadster and ‘05 Ford GT) because even after putting in a big chunk to make the cars better I still have less than $200k in each of them.

I think he is looking for someone in the Bay Area who specializes in Ferrari. Obviously, if you are in Austin, Josh Hill from Exotic Power and Performance is the way to go if you don't mind that he swears like a Sailor.

Neither Josh or I are an answer for him. Sorry guys, lousy suggestion.

Rod Drew at FAI in Costa Mesa is probably the strongest Ferrari electrical guy anywhere near the coast. You could also call Ben Salerno up near Sacramento, Rocklin actually and ask him how strong he is on electrical. He'll tell you. Talk to both.

Thank you. No signs of water damage or anything like that, but I’m assuming something maybe off since it was new and just never fixed? Just a guess at this point though.

It doesn’t have to be in the Bay Area. Just preferably the west coast since I’m shipping it from Kauai. I appreciate any advice. It honestly doesn’t even have to be a shop. Just someone who knows what they are doing, unlike me. Thank you.

I have done that and will continue to do so. I have found some issues there and it has felt great fixing them.

I completely agree. I will be the one to finally have this resolved.

    Re

I've been talking in PM to Mike about his reverse issue wiring problem. If his measurements are correct, he has a short in the wiring between the TCU and the reverse gear relay or a short on the wiring which goes to the unused gated reverse gear selection switch plug (i.e. Ferrari includes some wiring for both gated and F1 cars in their harnesses). It's just a matter of chasing down a short. I think any competent auto electrician should be able to figure this out with sufficient "briefing" (wiring diagrams, history, etc) and some good wire tracking tools. I wouldn't think that a short on this line would blow up the TCU, but I would fix this problem first just to be sure.

Mike did find some physical evidence that someone was looking at this problem before (some stripped insulation), but it doesn't seem to be shorting at this point.

Mike, do you have any auto electricians who make house calls?

Trev, Sam, and Dominik have been helping me a ton. Those 3 are extremely knowledgeable and I’m amazed at how willing they are to give up their time to help out a new guy. They know what they are doing. The problem is me and my lack of electrical skills and more importantly, my severe lack of free time.

Now that you cleared the ground issue, cleaned all the grounds do you think it is just a matter of replacing the TCU and be done with it
It could be you fixed all the issues and now just need to replaced the damaged parts e.g. TCU

I don't know. That would be nice though. I am working on the TCU warranty currently. In the meantime I will be going through and fixing all of my grounds. out of the 7 I've done, 5 had problems (rust or shrink wrap covering eyelet), so there is clearly an issue there. Also, the new alternator will possibly help as well.

Either way, I would feel comfortable having a professional look over everything for me once I am "done". In a weird way I feel like I owe it to this car to make this all right. I'll have to deal with shipping, but it really is not a problem. I am use to it with living on an isolated island most of the year.

Problem is I think I tore or cracked a rib yesterday, so now I'm even slower than before. Haha. Thanks for all your help with this.

Replacing all the relays is inexpensive and I had fun using DioxIt D5 on all the connections.

My fear for you is that you send it off to the best of the best and there will be nothing to be found since you may have fixed it .. that is kind of what I am saying

My advice ... finish all the clean up / testing .. and if all tests you do look good , install TCU and alternator and see if everything works .. hard to fix something that is not broken no matter how good the person is

I would hate to see you spend thousands of dollars on shipping to only find out they couldn't find anything

If I was the mechanic you were sending it to and there wasn't a problem I would be very hard pressed to accept the car ( no point in taking people's money )

    My two cents ..

PS .. don't underestimate yourself.. based on the conversations and pictures you sent me .. you already did more than 99% of people / professionals would have done to address issue

Thank you. I like to think I slightly know what I'm doing. Hah! Electrical stuff just has always been my kryptonite. I'll see what I decide once I finish up and get the new TCU in.

Mike you are smart and capable. When you run into issues like these, sometimes the answer is right under your nose. Helps if you can take a step back to find it. I’m sure your issue is something simple. If you can stand to park the car and just think, I’m sure you will find it. You seem like a very handy owner, which that car has finally found!

I had my PPI done at Roselli’s in San Jose. He came highly recommended. Very nice guy that obviously had a ton of experience. He’s a 360 owner as well. The only down side is his shop looks like a traditional mechanic only its Ferraris and Lamborghinis everywhere, stacked up from the years of either collecting or salvaging for parts. Wasn’t the tidiest place if that bothers you. Parts are kind of all over which did bother me a bit. I never got the impression that he didn’t know what he was doing though. He’s been in business for 40 years or something like that and has seen more than most.

There was a member on chat here that mentioned an electrical Ferrari guru at Vision Exotics in Sacramento Sergey Mavrinskiy is the owner. (916) 514-2988 Apparently along with Rod at FAI in Costa Mesa (who helped me) there is another one that might be able to help you.
