Cheers Steve. Yes we did manage the ILS at Essendon. It was still R16 at Melbourne but conditions had improved by then so no issues with approval.

Great experience all round. Lots of things I can share with my colleagues when I get back next week… and yes, the C182 was great

There's a town on the cape I went to with the RFDS where the airstrip is the highway, and they divert the traffic into a side street when using it - can't remember which town it was.

 

Highways are in short supply past,now,Lakeland and Cooktown.

I'm presuming you're talking about the PDR (Peninsular Development Road) which is the road to the tip.

Seeing as how it was only sealed to Lakeland about 15 years ago you could be talking about any populated place north,west and north east of Mareeba .

 

Just looked at a map - still can't remember. It was over 30 years ago

How many people realise the big 4 lane highway to Changi airport is Singapore is designed as a landing strip? The big planter boxes that divide it can all be removed within hours in case of war...

 

Always amazed at the great work the RFDS does in rural/outback Australia .....

Steve would seem NO political agendas?

 

He just finds it hard to fly with only a right wing

"Highway strip" NO big deal there are many countries around the world apart from Singapore that have it available, in fact, any 5 miles of a straight highway would do.

 

Not quite. It has to be clear of all obstacles and the landing area has to be reinforced. Only need 2 miles.
