I am the first owner of a 2015 Ferrari 458 Spider with 7500 miles, in pristine conditions and zero issues since the day I purchased.

In May of 2015 whilst being stopped at a traffic light, the car behind me got rear ended and got pushed into me.

Damage was light - all cosmetic, cracks in the bumper - but what is light on any other car ist still expensive in the Ferrari world.
The damage was dealt with at a authorized Ferrari body shop and they replaced the rear bumper, the left and right rear air intake, and the exhaust tip and of course the entire back panel had to be painted.

As I said before, there was zero impact on drivability and amazingly even the rear camera still worked perfectly . I have photos of the entire episode and the damage and of course the bills from the body shop.

If I wanted to sell this car what deduction should I expect?

The accident must be well documented (i.e. police reports, repair shop estimate and a detailed receipt, etc.), photographed (before, while undergoing repairs and when repairs completed) and matched up precisely with a carfax report. Assumming purely cosmetic damage, my WAG would be a diminished value of betwen 5% and 10%.

It’s hard to put an exact number or percentage on it. It will definitely take a hit but with the right buyer they may not be too concerned if everything is documented. Maybe someone here that has recently sold one with a bad carfax can chime in.

If I wanted a car, I'd pay market value regardless of a minor accident. At least it's documented. Think of all the cars that get into accidents and are pieced together on the down low.

I think its somewhere between 10-20% for a cosmetic only accident. It means the car will always have a story. Some buyers aren't going to want to touch the car at all regardless of how minor it was, some will expect a big discount. Finding one who doesn't care will be harder. Even if it doesn't bother the buyer at all, they're still gonna have to deal with it when they go to sell it. Imagine there are two cars of similar spec and one was in an accident. Buyer's are always going to choose the story-free car.

Depends of course on buyer's expectations. My car had a history of a scrape on the rear bumper but no structural damage. Bumper was replaced and repainted. Looks perfect. I accepted the repair and purchased the car for what I thought was a fair market value. It made no difference to me. It was disclosed at the time of purchase and I agreed to the terms.

It seems like most all of these cars are sold by dealers, and IME a dealer would both be hard on what they pay the seller, and then at the other end, are not going to bother with providing detailed documentation to prospective buyers. However if you were to sell privately yourself, and present the detailed photos and receipts showing the relatively minor damage as perfectly repaired, that would go a long ways to helping a buyer (at least one like me) feel good about limiting the value lost to 10% or less.

    First sorry for your pain!

A new bumper and replaced trim parts and even exhaust, if done properly using Ferrari parts should have very little effect.
If there was subframe damage crossmember deformation that would have a diminished value effect. So does the re-painting
Paint is tricky. If the color match is perfect, well it’s never perfect. Paint varies by the batch too. PPG is very good paint

8 year-old paint can’t really be matched. If they painted half the car it may look okay. It might not.

A complete repaint if done by talented experienced painters with top equipment and set up, taking their time and effort, might give a more factory new result. But this is expensive and in general insurance won’t approve a complete respray!

A buyer looking for a perfect car would take these things into consideration and might not make a bid
Someone who want a deal would make an offer you might not like

Absolutely no frame damage or anything nearly as serious as that, purely cosmetic. Please also remember the accident happened in 2019, so it was 4 year old paint then.

I can't say that I am an expert but I can't see any difference between the paint on the rear and say the paint around the engine compartment. I think they did a really good job matching the paint and this Ferrari bodyshop really is state of the art.

That is solid and great advise - thank you.
A dealer really does not want to get bothered with details and this kind of situation is about details and nuances.
And I agree that having the possibility to show a buyer the photos and details would go a long way. So, if and when it is time to sell I shall take a hard look at selling it privately.

To be truthful, I have not given that much thought as I currently have no plans to sell this car.
I really enjoy driving this 458 especially with open top and listening to that great V8. I don't want to jinx this but this has been the most troublfree car I have ever owned.
In 8 years other than required service, no visit to the shop. That is except the time at the body shop and when I had all the sticky rubber refinished at the same time the body shop did its thing.
So, my only reference on price what I see from time to time on dealer web sites and it would appear that the 458's are holding their value quite nicely.

10-15% if documented with pictures and invoices unless it’s some crazy high spec one of a kind car

As of today, there are 21 458 Spiders on Ferrari CPO website… as someone who is looking to buy a 458 I wish there were more to choose from… especially since I need a suspension lift- there are only seven… and to make matters worse, I would like black- there is only one black 458 with a lift and it is a ‘13 with 26,758 miles!

So, if your car is the color I want, and has a lift, then the cosmetic damage issue- correctly repaired, would only be a small concern… and I would be very impressed that you repaired sticky buttons- a minor, but still very PITA problem to fix…

If the accident or damage was disclosed to CARFAX, then the car will take a big hit vs a car with a clean CARFAX, big being a relative term. I've seen 30% hits because of the bad CARFAX, especially if selling to a dealer.

I would try a non-auction venue to sell it. I have watched trolls on BAT tear into accident cars to the point of creating doubt in the minds of bidders.
