Cam sensors are common to both banks, but do they fail all that often? Remember Taz’s saga where he got a code for the cam sensor and it turned out to be a skipped belt (but that was a complete no start, not just a hot start). There are a few cases on the forum of cam sensor connector contamination (oil/water) and one of a crumbling sensor connector. In the latter case, after replacing the cam sensor, the problem still remained.
I don't remember which one had more magnetism.... but it is very significant. I just got my aftermarket ones today and right out of the box the magnetism on both of them I would say is double the original Ferrari part hopefully I can get them installed tomorrow or Sunday. Will report back for sure. My problem is just difficult noisy hot start
In your case, you are probably right about a faulty starter, but it will be good to change the crank sensors anyway.
So to update everyone and future reference for people searching the issue down the road, the hot start has been resolved, regreased flywheel and starts up great now first hit hot or cold, I had ZERO chattering or noise from the flywheel or any signs that that could be the problem, it's a relatively easy process so if you're having a hot start issue I recommend you repack flywheel to rule it out.
Nice. My hot start issue resolved after my clutch grease repack as well with came back within months. Just haven't had the time to put those new crank sensors in but will report back ASAP.
Glad you were able to resolve your issue. On another note, anyway you can post a pic of your FPR, the Aeromotives? Im curious to see how they look/fit. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
So another update, car was running amazing, starting first hit, running better than it ever has then Friday was cruising on the highway at a steady 70mph when it seemed to develop a heavy misfire, ended up it had major mechanical failure, haven't pulled engine out yet to find the extent of the damage but definitely had a piston go into the head. Still runs just not on all cylinders. I've really had the worst luck with this thing, I really wish I didn't love the car so much Image Unavailable, Please Login
Oh my God that is catastrophically horrible I'm so sorry. I logged on tonight to report back my hot start issues only to find this.... that's awful. Will be interesting to know if this was belt failure or other. The results of putting in my new crank position sensors was awful. It ran worse than ever and had hot starts consistently worse than ever. I put the old ones back in. I'm now going to do what I never recommend doing and that is throw money at it. I'm going to replace the battery with a brand new 800/1000 CCA one just on principle and remove the starter, disassemble, clean, lubricate clean the brushes-armature Etc and see what happens. If no change I'll try the high torque starter that's floating around for $400
It should not be belt failure because the engine is still running. Possibly skipped belt resulting in piston-valve contact that could have caused a piece (from piston or valve) to be broken-off and smashed against the spark plug.
Did the hot starts improve (at all) when you put the old crank sensors back in? How was the magnetism on the new ones?
The engine ran as before after putting the old sensors back in. Meaning absolutely perfect cold and warm starts with occasional tough hot starts but once started runs like a sewing machine. The magnetism on the new ones were definitely I would say almost double.
A few years ago, I installed new KIA crank sensors and they work very well. What brand are the new sensors that you tried to use? Did you check/set the air gap with the new sensors?
I used the Kia, I also used all the Ferrari spacers and it barely made the minimum gap of .3mm. I may try to get some additional spacers and fool around but now I'm going with new battery and servicing the starter. Will report back. BTW the Kia sensor fits 90s volvo.
You are correct. A difference of .05mm actually. I found a source for spacers from a BMW that look like they might work these things are unbelievably thin it's like tin foil mine have 6 on each sensor! I literally used a razor blade and a magnifying glass to count how many spacers were on each sensor. I just put the brand new battery in and I have not been able to get the car good and hot to test for hot start issurs yet...maybe this weekend.
The purpose of the shims is more to make the gaps of left and right sensors equal (thus so thin), not so much to set the amount of gap as it is not critical - anywhere between 0.35 and 0.9 mm is fine. Probably better to avoid setting the gap near the extremes but select somewhere around the middle. When I installed KIA sensors, they were at ~0.6 mm without shims and the gap happened to be the same on both so I did not use any of the original shims.
Not to hijack the thread but thought I would update on my hot start problem. I've replaced the battery today with a brand new 800/1000 CCA. No change at all still random difficulty starting hot with misfiring and the terrible sound that it makes chattering the flywheel and starter so next is pulling the starter and servicing it... will report back. Not sure if it's relevant but when it does the hot start problem if I just give it about a quarter throttle on the pedal it starts right up no problem? I'm about ready to just live with it stop throwing money at it and just give it a quarter throttle every time I start it hot no matter what. Any advice greatly appreciated!
May be worth the effort to set the tpc sensors and throttle gap along with air screws. That throttle opening is letting more air in so may be an issue there. The procedure is in the manual also my rebuild thread near the end. Sent from my SM-G990U using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Honestly I have absolutely had it with this car and this problem and I'm just going to live with it. If I give about a quarter throttle it fires right up even when super super hot. I would like to keep the thread alive however to find out what on Earth happened to the original posters engune?
