The S5 is a replacement of the pilot sport 4, not the successor to the MPS4S. The MPS4S is still a better performance tire than the S5. Just in case you were deciding between the two options to go with.
no. it replaces the mps4s. dont let the new nomenclature confuse you. dont assume. there is a good youtube about it.
I didn't assume, here are 2 articles for reference, there are several more out there. Also confirmed with Michelin directly. https://www.ppmc-transport.org/michelin-pilot-sport-5-vs-4s/ https://www.tyrereviews.com/Article/What-is-ACTUALLY-new-with-the-Michelin-Pilot-Sport-5.htm
the new 5 is an S version. thats why its now only available to OEM cars. ferrari, porsche, mercedes. Aston Martin is the first to get the tire.
To be honest, I have had up to three plugs in one tire over its life on a 540i that was driven quite spiritly. There is no risk to it failing especially in the center treads and between tread blocks. Use the leather full length plugs and the good kit with fresh adhesive and a sharp rasp. Over time you learn the proper technique. A plug kit is a must if the car does not come with a spare. If you have a visible screw or nail and there is no leak yet you can do the permanent repair without even taking the tire off. I carry a kit with a separate set of pliers and a sharp blade in every car. At $400+ a tire and the risk of being stranded for a while its a no brainer for me.
What new 5? There is not a successor to the 4S. I can't find a single car from any of the manufacturers you listed, even Aston that uses a new tire that replaced the 4S Ferrari 296 come with 4S's or C2Rs
Hey everyone, my first post on FF but have been a lurker for some time. Bought my F12 some months back but for some unusual reasons I haven't actually driven yet. Took the decision to bin the set of Bridgestone Potenza's that it had when I bought it as I've never had good experiences with Bridgestones. Decided to go with the MPS4S with 265 fronts and so far it looks like the right decision. I was wondering what pressures people are using, that have made the switch. Are you just using the same pressures recommended in the manual for the Michelin Super Sports or do they need adjusting a little?
Pilot 4S at OEM sizes with 30psi front and 29psi rear COLD and the F12 will hook up in warm weather (e.g. 70F+ sorry I'm USA convert to C if elsewhere). You start getting colder ambient temperatures and you'll have an issue hooking up. I have tune and catless exhaust so I make a bit more power than a stock F12 and pedal 1st gear or just stab it at any point in 2nd the car will hook up. Those that can't hook either it's too cold, don't have correct tire pressure, or a sub-standard compound (worn tire, crappier tire, etc.)
Last March based on the advice received here I changed the tires of my F12 to the Michelins Pilot Sport 4S. Couldn't be happier because they represent a big improvement in every aspect when compared with the old MPSS.
Those that complain about grip do you tire shine your tires? I don't and the MP4S hook up great. I took care in for service they cleaned and detailed the car and threw that stuff on the tires. Definitely less grippy lol. It'll eventually fade off but just food for thought.
lol. i posted an article for clarification. manufactureres will get first dibs. please dont lose sleep over this.
I don’t really see what is so funny, Edward. You stated in your original comment in this thread that “ the S 5 should be even better” referring to the S5 being better than the 4S. (its not better) I simply responded letting you know that the S5 is NOT a successor/replacement or a better performing tire to the 4S. The fact that the PS S5 was already out at the time and your comment stating “it replaces the mps4s”, is providing others here with inaccurate information. Not only that, but your response was also arrogant and condescending by telling me “ don’t let the new nomenclature confuse you” and “don’t assume.” You were obviously the one confused and assuming. I linked two articles as well as contacted Michelin direct to support my comments. Here is the article you linked https://www.tire-reviews.com/Article/Exclusive-The-Michelin-Pilot-Sport-S-5-is-here.htm if you actually read the article in full or either of the articles I linked, I wouldn’t have to explain your ignorance to you. I’m taking my first hand experience, time, and effort to share with the members of this community to help them make the right decision when switching to the 4S’s so they don’t have to waste their time and resources through trial and error. You on the other hand are not providing any value to this topic with your false statements or demeaning remarks. If you’re going to be an a** at least be right.
The Michelin PSS tyres on my F12 are in need of replacement. After reading through several threads it seems the recommendation from most is to go for PS4S in 265 and 315 sizes. Unfortunately the inspection authorities here do not accept non-standard tyre sizes, so that is not an option for me. What is the next best alternative? PS4S in 255 (non K designation) and 315 (K1) sizes or PSS in OEM sizes and with K2 designation. I am aware that the PSS is older tech and I would need to be sure to get recently produced tyres but they do seem to be a good tyre. Thanks for your input.
Although Michelin themselves propose it on their web site, the mix of non K1 front / K1 rear may not be advised, but it really depends on the compared characterics of K1 and non K1 (of which I have no clue). I wonder if it's possible to get advice from a real Michelin "expert". Otherwise PSS K2 is the safest choice, the tyres are still in production so they should not be too old (although they are probably produced in batches).
