Perez: Curing key weakness has unleashed F1 title bid

“I think one of my weaknesses last year was looking after the tyres,” said Perez, when asked by Autosport about the importance of the Baku result.

“During the winter, I sat down with my engineers to go through it, because I was pretty disappointed [with last year] - I didn't have good race pace.

“I think we managed to understand a lot of things and we've been much better in that regard this year.”

While Perez has a reputation as being one of the best drivers at looking after tyres in the past, he says those skills were not easily transferrable to the Red Bull car concept.

Bad news for the opposition. Avec Newey and Verstappen, Red Bull looks invincible.

I think the Ferrari (engine) is slightly ahead (when it doesn't explode). It's the chassis, aero and driver that makes the real difference...we saw evidence of this since 2014 (talking exclusively hybrid era since the engine disparity was massive then), RBR capable of putting up real fights for positions with packages much stronger than theirs.

Baku was the first race since 2018 that Max got honestly beaten on merit by a teammate, and even then Perez had to dig super deep for it to happen and Max was still half a tenth slower only.

Hope is all he has really.

I know he's meant to say all this, anything less than that and it'll be ever worse...but a reality check is needed sometimes, lol.

All true. The full story of this race is how the RedBull driver's go against each other. Will Max and his Empire Strike Back!! :)

Nobody serious could believe Perez is a threat for Max.
Only am improbable series of reliability failures for Max would put Perez in the game.

But still, if we are to believe the reports, Verstappen feels that Perez is too close to him, and steals some of the limelight.

Verstappen is faster, but Perez has the uncanny habit of taking any opportunity to put Max in the shade.

In the end, I suppose that Perez will be sacrified to appease the Verstappen clan at RBR.

I thought that maybe Nyck de Vries had been recruited at TR to take over from Perez next year; now it's unlikely.

    Agree
I have to say Perez is a tough driver.
With age he is becoming a complete driver.
Years of midfield battles gave him a serious appetite !

yup. He's clearly the number 2 but always showed signs of being mega impressive on his day. Who can forget Malaysia 2012? In seriously difficult conditions getting P2, chasing down Alonso hard....

    Absolutely.
Do you think Max's reaction to Russell is related in any way with a growing pressure from Perez ?
i would say no but i am not in Max's mind..

Not at all. He'll have been annoyed with Russell unwilling to accept himself making a mistake, and his excuse of having cold tyres which was the same for everyone. George has caused a lot of collisions in the last 2 years that he refuses to accept responsibility for.

Post main race last week said a lot about Max's mindset. He's very much at ease.

The thing to me about them actually "racing" last week, is that it was hard to hide the actual performance of the car. Only was if if the mapping was turned down on both cars and held there.

I wish we had access to see which maps drivers use as it's happening. Not just for intra team battles but for everyone involved. The ''le mans style'' engine/fuel management is part of what makes the racing in the hybrid era just not very fun to watch.

Sounds so Toto-esque lol — the mitigation of developing “ domination “ :)

Horner explains why 'things could change quickly' for Red Bull

—Historically no team has ever lost either of the world championships having won the first five races of a season on the six previous occasions it has happened.—

One thing I´ve noticed is that the "middle class" (McLaren, Alpine, Alpha Tauri...) has gone south this year: in 2022 after the first races they had around 50 points and now they have around 15. So it´s not only that the first has a bigger margin with the rest but that the poor are poorer. The lap times are quite close though, so it seems the new rules are not bringing a convergence as they were supposed to do.
