Did you miss 2011 / 2012 with the donkey Ferrari ?

Second in the WDC was not too shabby.

3 points off the title in 2012. One of the greatest seasons of a driver that I can remember.

No, it isn't shabby at all, but did that satisfied the tifosi then?

I don't think so if I remember the comments at the time !

Some drivers become multiple WDC in a dominant car.
Other drivers have a good-but-not-dominant car or even an average car and do miracles with them.

Who is to be praised more?

Some drivers never become WDC in a dominant car. Others drivers have a good-but-not-dominant car or even an average car and still not perform. I'm not knocking Alonso, I like Alonso, but how many WDCs does Alonso have in an average car?

In other words, appreciation of drivers doesn't need to be based on objective hard facts, but on subjective emotions.

Correct. It never can be based on hard facts as race results are affected by the quality of the car and team; and (occasionally) Lady Luck.

Well, I am a rationalist, and I base my opinion on hard facts, not on emotions.

Forgive me this personal question: how do you choose the books you read, the music you listen to, the sports you like, hard facts or emotion?

Alonso has never once enjoyed the fastest car for a full season in his career. Yet he's a two time champion.

The 2005 Renault might have been more reliable, but the 2005 McLaren was by far the faster car over the course of the season.
The 2006 Ferrari was faster than the 2006 Renault.

How many times has Hamilton even drove an average car?

He’s driving one now and he had a heroic brilliant commanding drive from 13th to 6 th. No one can do that.

Once again trying to explain to some that statistics don't tell the full story.

A man wins 2 billion dollars in the lottery.
Another man was worked his way up to a billion dollar fortune.

The man with 2 billion dollars is clearly richer, but which is the better business man?

Can the Mercedes really be called average? It's in contention for being the 2nd best car and we are only 5 races in before it's big updates.

Heroic drive? I assume that was sarcasm.

    In keeping with this thread's title re: respect for Lewis;

BTW, doesn't F1 frown on drivers taking political stances publicly?

Sometimes I think some of you don't look at past racing before you post. It's cool, sometimes I can't recount everything.
Hamilton has won multiple championships where he didn't have the fastest car for a full season. I would say 2009 - 10 was a car off the pace. I don't know if I would call it average. It doesn't matter if a driver never drove an average car, the goal is to let your talents shine and stay away from average cars. Very few past chamions have spent much time in average cars. Hamilton was good enough to constantly be hired by above average teams in his career, unlike Alonso some years.

    That's a P&R issue.

I don't read fiction, only about history, also biographies or technical books on cars, or aviation history.
I follow mechanical sports, motor racing, MotoGP, Superbike, air and offshore racing, where the results are determined by the clock.
Apart from architecture, I am not really interested in arts, I admit. But even then, only the Art Deco buildings I find fascinating.
Although I watch old films as entertainement, and curiosity.
