new owner here (2015 458 spider, 18k miles) and wrestling with the thought process. bought it thinking 'forget resale, the goal is to put a zillion miles on and enjoy it'. But I catch myself re-thinking this a bit, and trying to avoid 'junk miles' on the highway and stuff.

where does value fall off the cliff on miles ? seems exponential on low-mileage (sub 12k) cars but once past 40k or so its all over the board (obviously way cheaper) and I'm left to wonder if there's a standard $/ mile you guys have in the back of your mind on 'excess mileage' depreciation ?

    I still use 2 dollars a mile below 10k and then 1 dollar a mile above 10k

Impossible to say, due to various reasons, but I think $2 a mile is a good ballpark.

This is a great question about cost per mile, but I think the idea of figuring it out rationally misses the point… the more objective you are- using graphs, purchase/selling histories, summaries of cost per mileage, reviews of the best options, and all the rest- the more you rely on that kind of data, the more you miss the value of the emotional experience of driving a Ferrari…

And exactly how much $$$ is that emotional experience worth…

There is likely a continuum with those who believe resale is the holy grail on one side, and those who could less about the finances of buying/selling on the other side… and knowing where you are in that continuum is the trick…

These cars are art (and science) that you can drive. In my case, the value has gone up tremendously since I bought it. I don't have to drive if very often to get enough enjoyment out of it to last me for a long time. To say, if I put a few hundred miles on it a year is all I need to keep that smile going. Where I live, the driving season is only about six months long so I like just looking at it in the garage nearly as much. They are perfect in every way one can find enjoyment in them. I have owned it for almost 2 years now. I do consider myself lucky having other hot rods that I can hop in and enjoy as well. So maybe the answer is to buy 2 of them, drive one, and let the other one, maybe a rarer version, be a garage Queen.

I was at a concours years ago with a 500-mile ex-Paul Newman F40. The story was two were bought; one was driven and the other was not.

Did you buy it to look at it or drive it? Be honest, and you'll get your answer.

For me, the joy isn’t only in driving these cars… I get IMMENSE amounts of smiles and joy from detailing and perfecting every millimeter of my cars… sometimes I’m perfectly happy on a rainy day to spend 8+ hours in the garage detailing some area of it…. The appreciation is combination of driving, washing, detailing, learning and simply just looking at them. So $/mile is not an equation I calculate.

I might dare to even say that I get more joy from the detailing and looking at it than I do from driving it….. (dodging tomatoes [emoji534])

Well, I have a side business company where I do cars from start (wash) to finish (applying ceramic coatings) - that process takes me from 25-40 hours of labor time per car. BUT, I’m was just speaking of how I maintain my own cars… which of course, is foam baths, detail brushes in every nook and cranny, blow dry with Big Boi, engine bay, wheel wells, wheels, tires, interior, glass, etc etc…. No actual regimen for my cars as I’m always doing ‘something’ on some part of them.. even though they’re spotless already lol.

I correct, perfect and then ceramic coat EVERYTHING on a car. The paint, the wheels, all plastics, all rubber seals, all leather, all glass, engine bay, wheels wells and even the tires get an SiO2 coating, not a dressing.,.. it’s a mental condition obv. [emoji4]

    Hello there fellow Michigander
I drove my 458 to the Ferrari Club Michigan Chapter Westside trip last year which we went all the way to Indiana instead of West side of Michigan & this year I'm taking it to a Pittsburgh Grand Prix trip with the Ohio FCA group, so I'm in the camp of Drive & Enjoy.
My 458 does share time with a 430 & 355 plus a New C8 Vette & 2 Vettes from the 60s tho... plus Michigan Shortens the Drivable Season too... plus I plan to keep it, so that might change perspective/goals???

The first thing I had to wrap my brain around was that it is a car, and cars are meant to be driven. If I enjoy the miles and get kicked on depreciation, so be it. I am of the belief that if you are too worried about losing money by driving it, find something else to do with your money. I bought it to drive it, not look at it.

Agreed, it isn’t like this car is a rare collectible……drive it regularly, no miles are “garbage miles”. I regularly take my cars to bakeries and such

As mentioned, you miss the whole experience if you're worried about dollars.

My old Scuderia had 75k+ miles, it went everywhere.
I actually had some lady in a minivan at a gas station comment "aren't these supposed to be nice" because it had all sorts of bugs smashed on it, road salt all over the under trays and carbon. I had put like 200 miles on the car that day alone.

With my current Pista i worry about putting miles on it, like how can I put more on it.

You don't think a car in which about 1500-2000 per year or less were made is rare and collectible??? I do.... Remember, everything in life is by comparison. So compared to most any other car, that is VERY rare and therefore, collectible.... most cars are produced in 10,000+ per day volumes...

ya ya ya, you can 'compare' to a car in which only 500 were made but that's just even more rare is all.

Yeah but even if they only made 1 of them, at the end of the day it’s still a car with 4 wheels and those wheels were designed to spin on the road. Drive it is what I say. That’s where I get the most enjoyment.

I do get some anxiety and frustration from miles and damage (low clearance, etc), but the enjoyment from driving outweighs it heavily. Plus, as you say, detailing can be a mediation of sorts, and it’s easy to need to detail when you put a couple hundred miles on every week

No, it is part of a series of good production exotics……nothing special from a collectible POV within Ferrari’s history. Just saying the guy should enjoy it by driving it.

Agreed. Just look how many are for sale. It’s neither rare nor collectible. Pre-Covid the regular production used cars could be bought at a nice discount. Even my Pista sold under MSRP pre-Covid (my damn crystal ball was broken and who knew how much I could have made if I kept it a little longer. Lol). The market will eventually be corrected and regular production cars will be under msrp again(trend is already happening).

Ya I agree with all that; it’s all correct— BUT again, any car with the productions number of any Ferrari is still ‘rare’— agreed not collectible as in putting ropes around it in a museum but certainly still something special to be cherished. And I wasn’t arguing against driving them at all— of course, drive drive drive (within reason since most places, we don’t wanna take them anyway)
