https://www.nfl.com/news/peacock-becomes-home-of-first-ever-exclusive-live-streamed-nfl-playoff-game Sorry, but I won't be subscribing anytime soon, if ever. I think this is a mistake, but who knows? I don't need to watch EVERY game.
I grew up watching 4 channels, and one of those was Public TV. Cable got up to about $170 a month, and I said 'nope'. I next subscribed to Sling, and about 4 months ago it got up to about $75, and I said 'nope'. Now I have 27 channels of Antenna TV, between that and the Internet, I'm fine. I Had Verizon Cell, then it went to $70 - for one line, I said 'nope', switched to Mint Mobile - $15 a month - it's OK. Doesn't have the coverage I would 'like' when I travel, but is Vzon worth $55 a month more? Nope. But I also may switch to a different cheap one that LOOKS like it has more coverage, but then I remember I traveled all over before cell phones were invented and never had an issue.... I was also paying $90 for home internet, looked online and saw my CURRENT provider had a package for double the speed, data, for $50, so I switched and cut that bill almost in half.(NOT throttled, either) SO in two moves I cut two bills a total of $210 a month. That's something... and yes, I know I got off-topic and ranted.... Anyway, If I need to know the score of an NFL game, I'll look online.... I'll NEVER subscribe to ESPN because of how they treat their employees, that, and I think Joe and Troy are the two most stuffed-up overrated 'announcers' EVER. Their egos would float a blimp.
$170 x 12 = $2,040 CATV $75 x 12 = $900 Sling Now paying zero $70 x 12 = $840 Verizon full price $15 x 12 = $180 Discount Mint Mobile (not sure if I would recommend them) Now paying $180/year $90 x 12 = $1,080 Cox Internet $50 x 12 = $600 Cox internet new deal found online Now paying $600/year Dumping Cable TV saved me $2,040 a year, switching to a discount cell provider saved me $660 a year, finding a new deal for Cox internet saved me $480 a year. SO, saving $3,180 a year - is going to pay for my flight and almost 2 weeks in Europe.... (Not counting food, and I plan on being there 2-3 weeks) I may go to the Isle of Man MC event, or maybe the Bathhurst 1000.... who knows? My only regret is I should have done this five years ago.... And yes, I know this is off-topic.
The old TV model has been broken for year. The big networks are dinosaurs. Crazy that they even went with YouTube TV for the Sunday ticket package…… all sports leagues could just stream all their own games and content directly and keep 100% of the subscription revenue. NFL app for your tv, done. NBA app for your tv, done. And so on…
Two ways to look at it: 1) Yeah, each league could run their own network and keep all the revenue, just like the BIG10 and SEC Networks do, but, 2) Will they get the same viewership numbers that allows them to make the tens of billions in ad revenue every year? I doubt it. Getting on TV is easy - making a zillion dollars - not so much. Speaking of TV 'Numbers', I'm not buying F1's reporting of their 'numbers' at all, I think it's total fraud. I have yet to overhear ANYONE talking about an F1 race at a bar, at the water cooler at work, or anywhere else. NOT ONE. But football? It dominates guy talk.
I'm thinking of just the way TV has been moving for a decade I've been on an internet-only Apple TV since 2011: I pay for YouTubeTV pretty much exclusively for live sports, with a little bit of live news if there is something major going on Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+..... that's it I would love to dump YouTube TV.... and just pay directly for the sports I watch via their own apps..... NFL, PGA Tour, NBA, F1.... that's pretty much it
So, you pay for: -Apple TV -YouTube TV -Netflix -HBO Max -Disney+ I don't watch anywhere NEAR enough TV to be able to justify the cost of all those. If NFL.com aired ALL the games, I'd pay about $30 a month just for that, as it is right now the only 'pay' TV I have is what comes with Amazon Prime, and I hardly watch anything on there, as well.
I have 3 little kids on Disney a lot. We watch a lot of series in general. The YouTube tv is the one I’d love to dump. But it’s my only portal to live sports. We don’t watch anything else on there And oh yea we have Amazon too, because we use the delivery service. A lot of subscriptions for sure. But that takes up a lot of entertainment.
