It might be nuts but we live in a democracy where people have the right to make their own decisions about where they spend their money.

What's happening in the UK and Europe, and being copied in Australian cities, is that unelected or unrepresentative city councils are imposing dramatic cost and inconvenience on the public, in the name of their particular ideology. The majority of people in major cities live outside the CBD and don't get a vote for city councils.

If Melbourne wants to become car free, then have a state referendum or make it part of the platform in a state election. The green left know it would be overwhelmingly rejected, so they do it by stealth. The "dictatorship of the proletariat" in practice.

It’s not about spending money or ‘rights’ - there are NO rights to road space or parking spots on the street (generally) - there just isn’t enough space for everyone these days! Of course we’re following the UK etc on congestion taxes etc because we’ve been too stupid to learn the lessons and pre-empt the crunch! Nobody is talking about making Melbourne ‘car free’, but LIMITING the number of permits to enter is what’s needed. No private person has a RIGHT to the public space of a city - it is by permission, which has been open until now and will have to get more and more restrictive as the population grows. The fact that this will be a PITA for many is purely due to previous inaction.

    I couldn’t agree more.

Two cars is nowhere near enough. Four is the acceptable minimum.

What a bizarre argument. "Permits to enter" ?

Please show us where in the constitution or under law, that Australians need permission to enter cities or use public spaces?

Section 12 of the constitution guarantees the right to liberty of movement.

I've tried but I can't think of a single counter argument to your statement.

‘Liberty of movement’ is not the same as having free access to every public space. Bet you wouldn’t be so keen on the liberty idea if someone was blocking YOUR driveway, or camping in your street or had a spare car, boat, trailer and caravan parked in the street! The idea of each man’s ‘right’ to do what he pleases went out with the wild west!

    Yo
You don’t leave them parked in the street overnight, nor do I think they see too many inner city roads. This isn’t an argument about cars per se, just about the inability of the inner cities to cope with the population pressures being placed on them.

Being back in Treviso makes me think you guys must all be living under a rock getting so worked up about CBD restrictions - I’m struggling to think of any major Western cities (outside Aus and US) that DON’T have restrictions... automatic fine of E81 (reduced to E57 if you pay within 5 days) here..
here’s my best ‘vehicle’ spot from this morning:

I didn’t crop the photo down because I love the love the ‘balance’ of the bike and the vestments!
