considering trading up to a 458, advice please.

Yes, of course. A traditional shifter is way easier to execute than a gated. Your chances of error are way higher on a gated.

Personally I think gated is much more difficult to go fast… but much more rewarding if you get it right.

 

As to the gated vs twin clutch choice:
I've had three pedal cars since the '70s. Some good, some annoying.
(The clutch damper in the EVO VIII made quick shifts impossible. It was installed to keep idiots from trying to dump the clutch in an AWD and wrecking the gearbox (as happened to several STis).)

I currently have a 328, and the gated hasn't been a problem for me.
(Okay, when the gear oil is cold, I might skip 2nd until it warms up. )

It was with extreme trepidation that I bought an EVO X MR with a 6 speed Getrag.
But I actually like it.
So if I was choosing between a 430 and a 458, I'd go with the 458.

I'd actually love to get a 458, but I just wouldn't drive it enough to justify it.
And I'd hate to get rid of the 328.

Silly me, I'm actually thinking of replacing the EVO X with a California.

On the turbo question, the issue for me is that I live in the mountains with 70 mph highways.
On a normal breather, the gas you burn going uphill, you get back going downhill.
But if you have to spool the turbo to get uphill at speed, you don't get that back downslope.
The (turbo) EVO X gets terrible mileage around here.

Some people find joy and reward in perfecting their own driving skills over having the car do the grunt work for them. Money can buy performance, but it can’t buy skills.

 

458 is one of the all-time Ferrari greats and can't go wrong, but keep in mind will be less engaging coming from an Evora S manual.

The manual F430 is a great car but not worth double the price of an F1 imo. I really like the F1, the shifts give you some kick and are a lot of fun to use. Plus on a manual the gear window doesn't do anything.

My first exotic was an Evora S, got written off, used the funds to get a 6 speed DBS, followed by a F1 F430 after. Both of which combined were less expensive then a 458. GT + Supercar, Manual + Paddle, V12 +V8. They compliment each other nicely. 6 speed DBS could also be swapped with manual V12 Vantage as well. Food for thought.

I've since added an EVO RWD Spyder and 812 GTS to the stable, but I still love the F430 and DBS, they aren't going anywhere. The F430 is analog and engaging, a ton of fun to drive at any speeds, very communicative.

 

458 was on of the funnest cars I ever owned. I think it had the perfect amount of power. The 9k redline and dramatic gear changes make driving the car an event. Also completely docile when driven slow.
