‘90 348- intermittent power loss. Like flipping an on/off switch.

Wiring you can check by wiggling the plug a tad while its idling.

How do you know what side an issue exists on currently? To swap mafs and see if the problem moves, you need to identify a specific problem on a bank and see if the problem moves like CEL lights moving to the other bank.

 

I only know the issue is with the right side MAF. If I swap the left MAF to right I can isolate the issue to either the MAF itself or other issues related to the plug, maybe. In theory if it is bad I should be able to run left side unplugged and right side plugged. I did wiggle the harness prior to unplugging the MAF and it made no apparent changes. I’m not convinced my CEL light is working at all because it’s never triggered. I’ll check and see if the bulb had been pulled.

Crazy that the car runs perfectly fine with the MAF unplugged right now..

 

When you energize the cars power on with the key, but don't fire it up, the CEL light should illuminate momentarily demonstrating the bulbs are fine.

 

What about re-seating the two ECU connectors?
You never know, at this point it wouldn't hurt to keep eliminating things.

 

Question:
Is this truly random, or does it happen under certain driving conditions.
For example, does it happen under sustained cornering, and then correct itself once the road straightens out?

 

Totally random, but more so under light acceleration, usually at around 3200 rpm. Comes and goes as it pleases, but still running perfectly with one MAF disconnected. Haven’t run anymore tests on it but will this weekend.

 

I have had a very similar problem (intermittent power loss) on my 348TS 1191 for some years
Checked/Replaced:
Checked MAF sensors
Checked electric connectors in the motor compartment, they looked fine
Fuel filters
Fuel pump rubbers: old ones were not too bad
Crank sensors: plugs desintegrated upon disassy
After that I experienced less problems and I decided to drive the car to Switzerland, 750km away
After an hour on the motorway the stuttering returned and I had to stop
The only thing I could do before calling the tow truck was to clean the electric connections going to the ignition coils
I restarted and the problems is gone!!
Done 500km since

 

Contact cleaner, horse-hair brush, Stabilant 22A?

 

My 89 348 was having a similar issue off and on for a couple years. During the major this year Ben Salerno found one of the cam position sensors very corroded. Since that was taken care of I have not had any more cut out or searching idle issues.
