    Chasing a 7-12 CEL light today…

Car has been driving flawlessly lately. While out today my 7-12 CEL light came on. I wa on the highway doing an easy cruise (75ish) and light came on. I pulled over blinked the code, 1212 Lamda regulation. I cleared it, but it returned on next startup.

I tried to go systematically here…. When I got home I cleaned and swapped MAFs, cleared code restarted no change, I pulled and cleaned the IAC valve for that bank (passenger side). Check as best I could for vacuum leaks or any cracked hoses, none. Sprayed and cleaned all electrical connectors. Code was still there.

I hooked up my fuel pressure gauge to the driver side fuel rail and held steady at 50. After shutoff it also held for 20 plus minutes, actually rose a bit from the engine heat.

Decided to swap O2 sensors in the hope it may be a bad one and the code will follow. While,I had the O2 sensors off, looking into the bung showed no signs of burning Cats…. I have Fabspeed high flow cats with about 1200 miles on them now. They looked similar in color. Left plug is from the Drivers 7-12 bank. Went for a drive after swapping O2 sensors, I thought I was in the clear after some full throttle pulls, but about 12 miles in, and back at slower speed and part throttle it returned. This is first time this has happened since the new exhaust components went on, including new O2 sensors.

What can I still try? I don’t want to jump right into considering timing issues yet. I Have not pulled a spark plug yet either.

Pretty typical of aftermarket catalysts. Initially had a problem with mine with Fabio's exhaust and cats. Trev did his magic on the Motronic ECUs to cure. Maybe you can sweet talk him into working on Motronic 5.2 for the late 456/456M/550 crowd.

Never mind, forgot yours is a 2.7.

Mine is the 2.7 indeed…. If that’s the case, I guess I’m wondering why now?

Are there four sensors in your photos or two sensors at different angles? If four, did you swap both sensors on both sides?

I thought the rear ones were a different design. That's why I'm asking.

Or doesn't the 2.7 car have rear O2 sensors? (like the F355 2.7)

Exactly, only 2. I see in some of the 348/355 threads people talk about checking the O2 ground wire. But the wiring goes right up above the Transmission. I did remove and reseat the Motronic plug. Havent been back out yet for a drive

Have an older original O2 sensor i pulled out which was working prior to the new cats, i can always put back in. Not sure if i should be approaching this as an electrical issue or real issue and start pulling plugs. Would next logical step be to swap ECU sides?

Hey man sorry to hear about the CEL. I'm totally new at the 456 and it looks like you did all the right things so far. Yes I think swapping ECU's is the next step.
Did you check the WSM? I think there is a flow-list of things to check...

So far from conclusive... but went out for a 30 mile drive today and no CEL returning. Highway and mixed backroads...

As much as we all hate electrical problems, while skeptical, I'd love to think perhaps this was a simple and isolated one. No more than a reseating of a plug... Time will tell, but Ill take my win for now!

hey man I found something on my car this am and it made me think of your recent CEL. #42 above- the exhaust system control unit. might be faulty. Snooping around my car this morning I saw that one of mine has been replaced (with a similar but not identical unit) (there is one on each side of the car- when you open the front hood you can see it behind the front wheel). This made me realize that at some point one of mine likely went bad, and it was replaced. Now the reading I did this am reflects that a fault is this system (bad calalytics) would likely cause the 'slow down' light to come on; no where did I read it would cause a CEL, unless the 'slow down' light comes on with the CEL? Anyway might be something to consider if the light comes on again.

That's the Cat ECU, which triggers the Slow Down light. On the 2.7 cars, its a stand alone system and not directly related to the CEL. I replaced my probes with new Telestrada probes when I did the Fabspeed Cats. So to the best of my knowledge the ECUs are functioning. If I'm wrong understanding those (for 2.7) hopefully someone will put me in my place.

I had over 60 warning light free miles yesterday

Its all in the diagrams and part description... Some of reference part 001 show 5.2 motronic Rear sensor and part 046 shows rear sensor with no reference to which system.

Had a beautiful day here in Central Indiana. I signed up for a road rally through the north and west of Indianapolis. What a turn out... over 100 cars easily. As far as I could tell I was the only Ferrari today. A lot of Mustangs and C7/8 Corvettes, but also an interesting mix of old British, some JDM and a healthy turnout of 6-8 Lotus (Lotii, Lotusessess) It was about 60 miles of mostly farm and backroads and sunny skies! I was solo today, so no pics from the road, but hopefully I can find some of the photographers pages from along the route.

The CEL light has thus far not returned in now over 100 miles of spirited driving.

    Ian- That parts drawing is for a 5.2 456 GT/GTA, not a 2.7

Its doesn't differentiate. There is no 2.7 only catalog that i have found. Changes for specific parts are noted in the part description. The O2 sensor differences is a little vague. Does make you wonder what the original 92-95 drawings were. Did they already have 5.2 planned by then

Funny thing about the difference between the 2.7 and 5.2 systems. The WSM has nice injection sections on the 2.7 (Nov 94) and 5.2 (Jun 96) and the 5.2 section has a nice drawing showing the front and rear O2 sensors. Of course, that part (pages C3-C62) is missing for the 2.7 that would have shown the layout of the O2 sensors. So it looks like Ferrari purged a lot of the 2.7 tech data when they published the version most of us have. Same, apparently, for the parts catalog.

Anybody got one of the original WSMs or parts catalogs published in November 94?
