Funny timing. I heard about these Gruen Day-Night precisions a few months ago and started trolling eBay for one. After some time, I found a NOS bracelet from one person and a NOS case, dial, and hands from another person. The case I found is a slight variation in all stainless steel with baton hands. I then found and bought a completely beater version of the watch (older style case with dauphine hands) with the correct N510CA Gruen movement, with the modification to change the "date wheel" 2x per day. I took the movement out of the trashed case, cleaned it up a bit (so far haven’t disassembled it, though I may try), swapped on the NOS dial and baton hands, dropped it in the NOS case, and attached the band. Surprisingly, it mostly works. The watch runs for some time, but sometimes stops; the day-night complication works fine. A slight jostle gets it going again. I suspect the movement needs a good cleaning and lubing. The basic idea here is a unique use of the “date”wheel and mild complication. All the number positions are hollow and a “date” wheel turns behind the dial. It changes to all black number markers at 6am and to all lume markers at 6pm. Picts of both modes below. It’s small (34mm) and light, and IMHO a cool vintage watch. It's also been a fun project learning how to mess with watch innards. Last week, I found a $7 version of a similar but not identical Gruen movement with a broken hairspring. I'm going to try disassembling that one and seeing what it would be like to clean and lubricate one of these, before I try anything crazy with the good one. If I don't think I can do it, I'll take it to a watch person for a thorough cleaning. Enjoy! I recently bought this used and got a great deal. I would never buy it used. The numerals are engraved, it’s difficult to photograph well, but it sparkles wonderfully in candlelight. Matt Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yes it the 23 realize green sky dweller. It's the first one my AD got and I'm grateful he gave it to me. I ordered the oystersteel bracelet as well. The green dial is stunning and changes immensely depending on ambient light. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
