Hi all. I’m sure there are many members who are familiar with the lovely handmade 1/15 models by the late Gerald Wingrove.

They are very rarely seen for sale in my experience, and Bonhams have a large lot at their festival of speed auction July 14th.
Including the delightful Alfa 2300, 2900 and Duesenberg, plus aero engines and more.

If you haven’t seen these, have a look at the picture and link below. In my mind there is no contest whatsoever between this kind of artistry and an Amalgam for the same money. Sadly slightly out of my league however!

Best to all and hope you enjoy!!

Good grief! That looks like it’s visited the barriers at Monaco.

Glad to hear all was resolved financially but really that is just negligent packing by Sothebys or their agent.

as an aside my brother in law would have built the gearbox on that car during his lengthy career in F1.

Ouch that Amalgam was certainly not packed by anyone who knew what they were doing. Unfortunately this has happened to other buyers of these from RM. I have been contacted in the past about doing some repairs for them on damaged Amalgam's. But Bonhams has also had a few damage problems with shipping Amalgam F-1 models. Overall those models are rather fragile, and have weak points and areas where the mfg. cut corners on strength & materials. So, when packing these types of models, whoever does the packing really needs to understand the particular model and see where possible weakness might be and understand how the packages will be handled in shipping. There is more to it than many may realize.

Bonhams has been selling Wingrove 's and other scratch built models for many years in their auctions. They refer buyers to one or two outside packing & shipping specialist who for the most part do know how to pack these types of models. The Wingrove's tend to travel well as do many other's, but of course much depends on the particular model and packing (I've been a buyer and seller with them, as well as with other auction houses.)

I have information on Wingrove and other model makers on my site. I'll send you a PM.

John Simon of Marsh Models was once asked how he tried to make sure that his built-up models would survive shipping. His answer was that he took the parcel to the top of a long flight of stairs and kicked it down. He said if the model survived that he thought it might just have a chance of surviving the post office. :(
