Removed the rear exhaust diaper this evening - further inspection confirms it needs some love and attention. Can someone tell me what is happening in these support square corners that are very rust rotted on mine?

What is being riveted? It feels like all metal - like thicker metal plates riveted to the sandwiched panel section. It's so corroded I can't determine what exactly needs to be replaced to correct and restore the rear exhaust cover/diaper.

One side note about it… the lower piece that is riveted on was the only piece that I had to replace. - Jeff

Thank you..... You are confirming what I discovered after looking at this section again - an insulation sandwich! Your resto work is awesome.

I only had surface rust on all but the two pieces mentioned earlier so I blasted the whole diaper first. Then I used the metal prep product which gives it the look in the pre paint picture. Finally I sprayed the POR-15 semi-gloss black which the finish in the last picture. 10 years later its still looks great. Image Unavailable, Please Login

my panel corners look like a bag of marbles......gonna push the limits of my panel-beating skills but I think I can do better than the last bodyman. I need to research a high-temp body filler to skim back to smooth.

I had dents like that too but they can be worked out with a body hammer and dolly, just don’t get in a hurry. I don’t think you will need to skim-coat. Good luck!
