Decided to set up this thread, the purpose of which is the open up a constructive debate without snobbery or prejudice about originals vs replicas.
1.) What is a replica and at what point does a heavily modified / restored original become more of a replica.
2.) Pros cons of both original and replica cars.
3.) Real life reviews. It would be great to get proper constructive feedback of both originals & replicas.
This thread is not intended to be a replica bashing thread and by replica I mean good representations of the originals. Not body kits on MR2’s as these I would never class as a replica. I know that replicas have been used by Ferrari in the past so I would welcome peoples thoughts on originals vs replica of all cars Ferrari or other.
Personally I have no issues with replicas, I think they have their place as long as people are honest about what they are.

Check the FIVA website for guidance. There are five major parts to a car, ie frame, body, engine, transmission, differential. A ‘genuine’ car is as it left the factory; to my understanding however, if you have three of the five, FIVA may consider that you ‘have’ the car. What your local motor vehicle registration authority thinks may be another matter. This obviously gets contentious very quickly.

I did some work on a 308gt4 that was an absolute state. Half the chassis needed replacing, the roof and most of the body resembled a cheese grater. It didn’t have any suspension or hubs and its drivetrain was completely missing. Literally a rotted body on a bent up chassis. I remember thinking at the time so much of the is being replaced 90% in essence this isnt that 308gt4 anymore.

Wrong website for this kind of debate, it only ever goes one way where Ferrari cars are involved on here.

You will never change the mindset whatever angle you come from, however you will get a broader discussion on a non marque website.

Yours is a homage to the original, not pretending to be anything different, and will be appreciated by the general car loving public out there.

Worse thing you can do though on any example that is not Ferrari based is to put Ferrari badging on the car, better to come up with something creative that is similar and then even some of the die hards will appreciate the work that has gone into the homage

So this gets ‘restored’, rebuilt, and people pay good money to see what is essentially a replica? And that’s OK?

    Hello Terry,
I drive a replica in South Africa. People love it. Naturally it's beautiful, plus you will never get to see the real one in my country.
So, that is an added bonus to people. And it took the same amount of planning and work as building an original in the 50s. Don't wait for it, you won't earn credit for that...

Many drive a Cobra replica. Also nice to look at, if built properly. But fails a bit to achieve the above. Too many of them. And like myself, who has seen a few originals, the sensation is a bit dull. You look at a pretty car worth $50.000 but it feels different to seeing the real thing for $1 million.

I am not even going into the "sell a replica for the price of a real one" scenario. I never would do that.

So what is better, a XJ13 or GT40 replica for $100.000 or a used Ferrari for $100.000? Too many thoughts one can play in their brains...
