Annual Monterey auction thread

Every lot at RM Sothebys. After last years record setter one could be left thinking how do you top that, a good 250LM helps as does all manner of Jaguars, Bugattis, Porsches and much much more. The combined high bids are $267mm so there is potential to equal last years record of $239.2mm in sales and again one must note this is for 204 cars so average high value is around 1.3mm USD! Much of the good stuff is on Saturday night where in one 33 lot block just 7 are valued below $1 mm......... Some of the most interesting lots are those from the Medlin collection while I personally love the Fiat 8Vs and Siatas on offer

Gooding have also done well to find 160 cars worth around $160mm including some lovely Edwardian classics from Rolls-Royce, Simplex, Mercer and others. Elsewhere the Ferrari 250GT Short Wheelbase will do well as should the very nice Bugatti Type 55 and Hispano-Suiza J12. Definitely now second fiddle to RM and their colossus, this is still a beautiful auction worthy of close attention. My personal fave is either that stunning Pegaso Roadster or the one family owner from new Simplex, what a pair of cars!

Bonhams have been very much the third of the major auctions, perhaps even fourth to Broad Arrows. But its not that long ago that they sold a fine McLaren F1 and before that a Ferrari 250GTO so they can shift very expensive motorcars when offered. This year they looked to have a very nice, if unspectacular list of offerings until mid July when they shocked the car world by announcing both a very fine 212 Export and one of the most original of a handful of 412Ps. If they can sell the 412P, it will easily be the most expensive car sold across the week. My favourite car on offer is probably that Talot-Lago, it is stunningly beautiful!

Broad Arrows have secured several collections, one of 1950s-70s Detroit heavy metal and the other the Academy of Art Collection, mainly 1930s full classics. Elsewhere several supercars feature, namely a Ferrari F50 and 288GTO and a 2007 Porsche RS Spider is the headline act at $5-6mm. My faves are the 1956 Maserati A6G/54 and the 1937 Delage Coupe. The 172 lots have a combined value of $111mm.

Exactly what I was hinting in another thread in Dino section.
Are we perhaps seeing a run out leading to a crash like in late-‘80s/early-‘90s, with many/most investors/speculators running for the exit before the music stops ?
Just like 30+ years ago, the so-called “market” for lesser (perceived) value, i.e. five figure vintage cars, seems to have been falling towards freezing levels for couple of years already with no signs of leveling yet, so six figure ones loosing their footings soon shouldn’t be surprising.

 

This is the number of Ferraris I counted at the various auctions in Monterey (includes Dinos, a few cut Ferraris and a few Ferrari chassis-based fakes and replicas):

Do you (or someone else) by chance have a relatively accurately confirmed (i.e. independently verified, not vendor "reported") percentage of examples sold to end-users (not dealer-to-dealer, etc) per each year ?
Just (mildly) curious.

 

So many "End users" come much closer to flippers than not and so many real collectors have dealer licenses I don't know where you'd draw the lines. Then so many buy sell trade to get what they want, again, where is the line drawn? I can name a few that buy just for trading stock.

modern cars are so fast and comfortable that the older cars are a throwback to a time some never experienced.

 

I think the problem as time goes on the younger generation will want them but for different reasons, it wont be about the sound of a V12 and the cars will simply be seen as investments, as a piece of art rather than a car, arguably this is already the case to some extent but I think this will just accelerate. The other school of thought is, that as car become more and more boring people will find attraction in cars which are more analogue and mechanical in nature.

In in my view the real picture will probably be somewhere between the two.

 

There used to be collectors that felt they got boring when the lights no longer required Kerosene and the starters were electric. The definition of boring is a moving target depending on your age among other things. When I was young brass era cars were all the thing in shows. Not so much now.
I can see a time when a lot of attendees shrug at the 275 display.

I agree and believe it has been for awhile already.

 

Cars, airplanes, yachts, even land. When the prices get high it all becomes a commodity eventually.

I think once it gets valuable enough its almost never used for its original purpose you could call that a tipping point. On the other hand, if not for their value there would be little motivation for preserving them to the level we do now. Its a double edged sword.

 

I agree, but as a lifelong hardcore vintage car enthusiast can’t help if I find it sad when it’s applied to them.
And for full disclosure, my livelihood depends on peoples (owners ?) ability/willingness to spend money on them.

 

There is a direct relationship to value, willingness to spend money and availability of parts. Right now we are at the pint where they converge on the graph.

I have a 330GTC here right now that has been in a single family for a long time. Undriven for years and its getting put back on the road. I have not done one for a little bit and am shocked at how many parts I need that can just be ordered. And very high quality parts. No custom fabrication required. No calling all over the globe to find it. It has not been that way for a long time and it because the car is worth spending 6 figures on.

 

All good points but the last major buyers market was 25-30 years ago (roughly '95-00) when all Ferraris were cheap (a 250GTO could be had for $3 mm) with the Japanese and other 1980s collectors running out of money and tech stock shares were high. Many of todays whales (McCaw, Shirley, Davies and so on) built their collections at that point and their average age must have been in their fifties or sixties. That would put their average age at seventies to eighties and not many 80 year olds want to drive their collection and more-so want to avoid the will dramas of the Bardinon family. That said many are wealthy enough and smart enough to just put their entire collections into perpetual trusts to avoid some of these problems but still everyone else becomes a seller later in life.

None of us are getting any younger and yet I remain surprised by the number of younger collectors picking up full classics and seemingly with bottomless pockets, instagram user Timetodrive5 for one.

 

Dr. Fred Simeone had three fully restored Bentleys including a Blower and when he learned Virgil Millet owned a very original 250TR began to work a deal that began with the three Bentleys and later involved him buying several cars that were as a package swapped for the 250TR. That was circa 1990 and further deals involved Joel Finn swapping several cars to Millet in a trade for a Mercedes W154 Silver Arrows GP car. Fast forward 15 years and one of the McCaw brothers swapped multiple Mercedes and cash to various parties to get another Mercedes for a swap with the Mercedes-Benz museum for a 300SLR, a sister car to the 1955 racers that Moss won at the Mille Miglia and Levegh killed 80 at Le Mans. That deal ended up in court when Mercedes reneged on the deal after two years of work. Some of these deals are to supply something impossibly rare that prise's a car out of of a museum, per the Henry Ford museum swapping the 250TR #0704TR for Henry Fords original 1906ish race car, old #99 but many are done to avoid paying sales tax at either end of the transaction. And while you might have a billion sitting in stocks or in your offshore tax haven, that doesn't mean you want to declare it so using that money aint easy and a tax free swap makes financial sense. But it effectively means these guys either hire agents to deal on their book or they deal themselves and if your collection has 50+ cars its all tinkering around the edges anyways.

Mecum have again gone with their weird mix of upper end classics, supercars and Americana, oh and a whole heap of $hitty used cars. Highlights in '23 are the ex Letterman collection and a fascinating selection of re-runs, my favourite is the 1937 Mercedes 540K Spezial Roadster, even though it was burnt to a crisp, although both 275GTB are gorgeous!

I have only included star cars AND every Ferrari listed at 31/7/23 and Mecums selection will change dramatically between now and mid August, it makes any kind of coverage bloody difficult!

I met a guy in the 90's who claimed Anthony Wang swapped 100 Ferraris (think 308's etc.) with Bob Rubin to get the Bugatti type 59 #57248.
Whether the details are accurate or not, it speaks to the idea that Tim is referencing: trading stock.

 

I found it interesting that if you take the F40 as the last "Enzo" model, about a quarter of the offered cars are post-Enzo, and post-Enzo covers 31 years while Enzo years covers 40 years (about 40% of the years are post-Enzo). So there definitely is a bias towards the cars that older...
