Hi all. I plan to pick up my recently acquired 456 soon, and it has an inoperative factory radio. I did some reading up on them, and I know it's not as simple as pulling it out and slapping a DIN aftermarket unit in while I have the original repaired.

So, I was wondering if there is a reasonably easy way to wire something up for the interim, presumably interfacing with the wires to the unit mounted in the trunk. The goal is to be able to enjoy music/podcasts/books for a road trip before I'm able to actually able to properly deal with the original unit.

To go along with the above question, I suppose that I should ask if there’s a reasonably easy way to swap a 456M Becker unit in place of the Sony unit the 456GT came with.

I used one of the inexpensive VDO/Continental units on my M. The chassis is very short and the BT, speakerphone work well. I realize with a non M car the radio replacement has way more problems, but it seems buying the Ferrari-branded Becker, probably with no harness would compound that.

Just throw a Bluetooth speaker in and jam.

Figure it out proper when you get back from that first trip !

I'm in the middle of redoing my whole sound system right not so I am intimately familiar with the AV system. There are a few 'short chassis' units you can swap in pretty easy like the short chassis continental unit, or the Boss 609UAB. should be plug-n-play with the wiring BUT you'd have to re-route the wiring (swithched 12V, ground, constant 12V, and amp turn-on) from the trunk (where the oem head unit is) to the dash din. This would require a bit of back seat removal and wire-passing, but if you've ever done it before it's not THAT bad.
OR, maybe a simpler thing to do - you could swap any head unit with the oem unit in the trunk, as long as it has bluetooth. then it would literally be plug-n-play.
THIS all assuming of course the wiring is ok, which it probably is since the wiring is rarely the problem...
Eventually you can put is something sleeker and sexier or whatever you want. I chose to go with Retrosound Grandprix. It has the old school look with modern-day stuff like bluetooth streaming and hands-free calling. Took a bit of know-how but all good in the end...
Let us know how it goes!! or if you need any other help.

Hi All, I am also in the process of finding solutions. My radio currently switches off every 5 minutes and my front right speakers don’t work.

Two aftermarket solutions that I am considering are:

    1. JBL Grand Touring Bluetooth Amplifier: this would bypass the head unit, and stream via Bluetooth directly through the amp. I would also move all speakers to the channels on the new amplifier (I assume I would have to match appropriate speakers for this solution)

    2. As Jared mentioned I have also enquired about the RetroManufacturing Grand Prix head unit. RetroManufacturing states that their units can be remote mounted and sounds plausible.

I am a newbie when it comes to aftermarket sound. If anyone has any experience with the above mentioned solutions, I would also appreciate some advice.

    Kind regards,
    Rian

Rian84- that JBL looks cool. Alpine makes a similar unit with a slick wired remote- someone else on Fchat posted a pic a couple weeks prior. I’ll try to find it. The only issue with these is no hands-free calling, and no radio (both of which may or may not be important)

I’ll take some pics of the grandprix as it’s going in. I’m putting the chassis in the trunk where the previous head unit resided. And via extension cord putting the grandprix faceplate in the din spot on the center console. I’m hiding the accessory USB ports in the front and rear ashtrays, next to the lighters. My car came with 2 separate amps! (Where the spare tire lived) One for speakers and one for subs- I’m reusing them (although I’m not a big boom kind of guy- I just didn’t want to rip them out)

your speakers if original are probably old and/or the wiring may be bad, so you’ll want to check on all that…

happy to help any way and good luck!

John, I think that's a radio from a different car. It's a regular depth unit with a tape deck. I think the early 456 came with a very short depth unit that had only a CD player? The 456M then came with a Becker unit that was substantially deeper and which will not fit in the 456 (non-M). I may be off base, though.

Correct, the 456GT uses a vintage '80s/'90s computer ribbon cable to connect the halves together. You cannot use standard 1DIN size radios in its cavity directly without notable customization.

Radios where the complete face an be removed can be adapted but likewise:
    1. A partial 1 din frame needs to be made to hold just the faceplate. Depending on your budget the easist solution is to just buy two of the desired radio and cut one part so its essentially a gloried anterior frame only.
    2. Where/how the faceplate normally mounts an extension cable/ribbon needs to be soldered (this can be very challenging).
    3. said cable would go connect to radio body (intact one) located somewhere else. The traditional solution here was to use to glovebox as its quite cavernous and still useable even with a radio added.
