Planning to inspect a 206 Dino and would like to determine whether the motor turns freely. Can someone provide guidance, please. Will a socket wrench suffice? Socket size?

38 mm or 1-1/2” socket for the harmonic balancer bolt. See references for the Fiat Spider. They both used the same 2 liter motor.

There was a Wheeler Dealer episode where Ed advised that before trying to turn a suspected seized engine to remove the spark plugs and completely soak the walls of the cylinders with WD40 or similar. Let it soak a bit then turn clockwise

I believe it is 36mm. That is the socket I use on Ferrari crank bolts.

is it being noted at seized up? why not just put it in gear - take the oil cap off and rock the car, watch for the camshaft to turn? it's being reported as seized ... then try to turn by hand?

Why bother? If if it needs that to turn the motor is junk and needs an overhaul.

I agree Brian but Chris asked for help and I provided what I heard. Also if by chance it did not rotate(truly seized) then the answer would have been to move on to another engine. I know absolutely nothing about engine rebuilding cause I'm still trying to get past my own ordeals when I pick up a wrench.

Agreed. Good way to go. Actually, better than the wrench on the harmonic balancer nut is to put it in third gear and push. Light car, easy to turn over motor…..if not frozen.
