I fear there are no Greyheads there. My dad started at Sikorsky in the 60s and he likes to say that he and his team never knew how to say 'It can't be done' but they DID have access and listened to the people who grinned and said 'Yeah. We tried that and it won't work.' Cool new/innovative stuff still happened, but it's because they were properly guided forward.

Reminds me a lot of a few of the early interviews in this doc.

Looks like Boom has hired a VP of engine design to oversee the design, development, and testing of their new engine. He comes from several decades at Boeing. It’s going to be a steep mountain to climb but I wish them the best.

Why would you hire a VP for engine design from a company that does not build engines? Seems like a RR, PW or whatever guy would be a better choice.

I guess Boom hires who they can hire. This guy has experience integrating engines onto commercial aircraft so there’s that.

But yeah, a seasoned engineering exec from P&W would have been nice.

Looks like Boom is still proceeding with ground test on it's demonstrator XB-1 in preparation for a first flight.

Not sure how that test plane relates to the redesigned Overture aircraft (went from three engines to four along with changes to the wing profile) but whatever. I guess they have to fly that thing to justify all the time and money sunk into it.

Pretty much the way I see it. I'm sure they'll derive some useful information. But, it would be their death knell to scrap it and admit to investors they just pissed away millions or billions of their dollars. So, they'll piss away millions more to save face and keep the music playing.

Boom continues to build their "factory", mostly just a large metal box on a slab of concrete, in Greensboro, NC.

And they still haven't flown their (outdated) experimental proof of concept jet. And who knows where the engine design is at. Let alone the full design of their 50 pax Overture jet.

Wish this whole thing would work but I don't think it will. I figure they will fold in 3-5 years.

    I wish them well.

However, little of this project makes sense to me: size, engine selection, politics, etc.

    I hope I'm wrong.

    Regards,

I am still waiting for United's electric helicopters to fly before I even think about a United supersonic airliner:rolleyes:

So true. eVTOL's will fly before Boom's supersonic passenger liner.

Yeah, we're gonna see eVTOL's fly before we see Boom's supersonic airline fly. I mean, we'll probably never see that thing fly but still.

Well I'll be, this thing actually got off the ground. Let's see if it goes supersonic one of these days. I can't imagine how long it will take to get an airliner off the ground. 10+ years?

They have a way to go, but congrats!

(XB-1 met all of its test objectives, including safely and successfully achieving an altitude of 7,120 feet and speeds up to 238 knots
    (273 mph).)

With that thrust to weight ratio, she should have no problem going supersonic.

Well at the very least the demonstrator should get an award for 'Experimental of the Year!' And that test pilot deserves a Chuck Yeager 'Brass Balls' award...

Provided the inlets are properly designed for supersonic flight;) Although that should be fairly straight forward after 70+ yrs of supersonic flight (by jets).

Yup, so many ways to do that now, many with no moving inlet parts required.
