    Could anyone advise about the original colour of the rear panel (housing the lights and number plate) on a late 1983 400i? Mine is body coloured. Was this optional, or was black discontinued around that time? Thanks!

    Black was on the earlier cars, not on the 400i gen2. Not sure about the transition date but my late gen1 (dec 81) was already body coloured, whereas 400carb had the black pannel.

    I always thought the 400 had the black panel and black bumpers, whereas the 412 had the coloured panel and coloured bumpers.
    It’s black on my series 1 400i auto.

    The initial series 2 cars manufactured in 1982 retained the black rear panel. During early 1983 they changed to body colour. So yours is correct.
