In fact he is paid a basic wage by the team, supplemented by a point bonus and receives fees for doing sponsors PR.
I read somewhere, that in total he received in the region of $8M in 2022.

He was only able to win the modest German F3 championship on this second attempt.

Yet, he was part of the Mercedes Youth Program and raced for them in endurance with Frentzen, Wendlinger and Kreutzpointer.
Single-seater has never been a strong path in Germany; sportscars, endurance, GT; touring cars, DTM is what many young German favour.
