Hi this is my first post, having had my 1986 328 GTS for three months! The driver's door check strap makes two loud cracking noises each time opened or closed. It is the mechanism, not the roll pin at the door. At the mechanism, the arm moves a little vertically each time it cracks. I have a NOS replacement mechanism, and would like some guidance as to how to replace. Seems like there is a cover held by two screws to access the whole area but the two door position electrical sensors may cause complication? Or is there access from the wheel well? Is it necessary to remove the door? This would be my first non trivial job on the car so I'm a little nervous, although I have lots of experience on my other toys (BMW M3, old Ford Mustangs etc) and a well-equiped garage. Appreciate any guidance.

Take it to a Ferrari mechanic and let him fix it for you...

Yes good suggestion. However the nearest "Ferrari mechanic" is 500 km away. There are two 328's in Chile, and one 308, as far as I know,

Ask Rifledriver, he knows these cars every which way. Good luck.

    Welcome!

    Open the door
Remove the two screws securing the black panel
Pull the wires on the two switches
Tape the wires because they activate the lights by grounding
Remove the c-clip and the clevis pin on the door side
Remove the two 13mm bolts holding the stop
    Remove the stop

    Install in reverse order

I hope that will solve the problem, but I had the same situation, and replaced the check strap, but it wasn't the check strap. The sheet metal attach point inside the door had cracked/ripped, and that's what was making the "cracking sound". The door had to be removed, and a plate welded around the attach point to fix it. So, be sure to examine and check for play when you unattach the check strap from the car frame to be sure it's solid.

Thank you, I think the door is OK but will check carefully, hopefully I will get to do the job this coming weekend.

May I ask where did you get the NOS replacement check strap from? My driver side door is making the same twice cracking noise too.

By the way, I suggest before laying out a wad of cash, knock out the roll pin at the door and see whether it is intact over its full length, and also take off the panel (two screws) far enough to see whether the two check strap assembly attachment nuts are tight.
