I just let another friend drive my F8– he hit the rev limiter 3 times in a row cos he didn’t realize how quickly it gets to 8k. How bad is this? No big deal? Or is it really bad?

Clearly bad. Also voided the warranty as they run a diagnostic when you take it in and will see it. Really sucks and sorry.

KIDDING. Not bad as the limiter prevents any major damage and cuts off fuel when you hit it. Should have noticed a power loss when you hit the limiter as they are designed to protect the engine. It’s not like what we are used to, growing up when you could blow up the engine by hitting the limiter.

Just remove the governor. The governor works in a way that when you accelerate, the throttle goes to wide open. Once it reaches a certain RPM, it holds back the throttle, so that it doesn't over rev. You can adjust the governor so that you get HIGHER revs out of it. It worked on my go-kart.

I'd also recommend adding nos. It will help slow those revs down so you have time to shift.

When it hit the rev limiter did you feel the car jolt ?

My dad always said, lend out your wife but never your tools. I believe your pride and joy is in the same category.

Lol@eric and no, it didn’t jolt, just made a bap bap bap noise for a second until he shifted.. wasn’t a big deal. Just, you know me, I worry about anything too abusive or potentially harmful on the car. [emoji4]

Hitting the rev limiter three shifts in a row indicates lack of driver talent. Maybe refrain from handing over the wheel next time.

I'm very curious what you said after this happened? I know you from the forums and how you are about your car. TBH it's a scary thing the first time it happens, especially if you don't know the consequences (or lack thereof thanks to the computer).

    Is the friendship over?

LOL, nah, I just re-explained the lights on the wheel for him. He said he was trying to go based on the engine sound but I told him, he doesn't have enough experience with it with only this one drive to know the car lol. ALL was fine and laughed a bit.. (most of my forum personality is intentionally and intensely exaggerated cos I'm a little touched in the head and normalcy bores me)

I wonder whether it's the same with the F8, but on the 488 the rev limiter varies depending on gear (or whatever other parameter)... so avoiding to hit the rev limiter is not as simple as looking to some redline on the rev counter. Therefore, the LED lights (that initially look like a funny but somewhat useless gadget) are actually helping to shift at the right time.

I've never noticed that-- but doesn't mean it isn't true

The 488 was advertised to have a rev limit of 8,000 rpm - but in most of the cases, the rev limiter cuts the throttle somewhere between 7,300 and 7,500 rpm (some people have tried hard to reach the 8,000 limit - I think it may be allowed in some Launch Control situations, but I never read some conclusive study about how / when the limiter goes into action...)

I've definitely seen 8k on mine and I would NEVER use launch control, that's for sure....so guess it's diff in the F8

I don’t know, I’ve never reached that far in. Feels nice on the outside though.

Noticed this too in my 488GTB. I’ve even put it in auto to see where it shift and either in Sport or Race or ESC off shifts appear around 7300 or so.
